Palau Community College (PCC) has obtained a major four-year grant to assist high school students to develop the skills, knowledge, attitude, and motivation needed to enroll and succeed in college following graduation from high school.

The Upward Bound Program consists of an Academic Year Component and a Summer Component which includes such activities as follows:

Academic Year Component - October to May

* Tutoring in Math, English, Science, and
    Foreign Language after school;
* Year-Round Counseling and Advising;
* Mentoring Program;
* College Planning and Placement;
* Financial Aid Counseling;
* Test Practice for ACT, SAT, & TOEFL;
* Career Exploration and Planning;
* Monthly Workshops for Participants; and
* Quarterly Workshops for Parents.

Summer Component - June to July

* A Six-Week Summer Program of intensive college
    level activities;
* Tutoring Services
* Instructional services in English, Math, Science,
   and Foreign Language;
* Guidance counseling services;
* Computer Training;
* Cultural Awareness Program and Activities;
* Field Trips;
* Recreational and Social Activities;
* Summer Bridge Program;
* College Campus Tour;
* Job Training Program; and
* College Orientation Program.

 ELIGIBILITY

To receive services, students must meet the following criteria:

* Students who are enrolled in 9th, 10th, or 11th grades at any high schools in Palau;
* Students who have the potential to succeed in college but need additional academic preparation,
   tutoring, counseling and other relevant college information;
* Palauan citizen or eligible noncitizen;
* Would be * "first-generation college student" or from low-income families; and are willing to
   make a commitment to complete the Upward Bound Program upon being accepted;
* Demonstrated need for academic support and services provided by the program.

* First-generation student is a student whose parents never obtained a bachelor's degree.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

* Actively participate in the program's activities until they graduate.
* Meet regularly with academic advisor/counselor.
* Keep staff informed of academic progress with grade reports.
* Enroll in a college or university upon graduation from high school.
* Maintain communication with the program regarding progress in college.

PARENT/GUARDIAN RESPONSIBILITIES

* Ensure fulfillment of all student responsibilities by their enrolled child.
* Communicate regularly with Upward Bound staff regarding child's progress.
* Actively participate in the Parent Meeting and/or Committees.
