Fall 2008 Enrollment Exceeds 500 According to the Registrar's office, the number of students attending Palau Community College (PCC) reached 575 for this Fall Semester. The increasing number of students to the College is a result of a large number of people in Palau and in the Micronesian region who are choosing PCC as their choice of institution for their educational and training needs. PCC not only offers Associate of Arts (AA) and Associate of Science (AS), but also Associate of Applied Science (AAS) and now Associate of Technical Studies (ATS) degree programs in a comfortable, safe, and friendly environment. More importantly, PCC guarantees the quality education one so deserves and at a very affordable and reasonable price. The College is also continuously improving and expanding its services. With its PCC-San Diego State University (SDSU) Online Bachelor's and Master's degree programs, PCC has also made it convenient for those in the community to further their education without leaving Palau and all the while maintaining their jobs and contributing to the welfare of the nation. In addition, PCC's Continuing Education (CE) office offers short-term training courses in various career and technical fields to bring you up to date on the latest trends, whether it be computer training, learning a foreign language, or real estate appraisal training. Moser Conducts Training and Site Visit for |
CT Students Out on the Field Construction Technology (CT) students were out on a field assignment at a new building construction site on campus. Students put into application grouting methods which they learned in the classroom, as they worked on sealing in the tiles of the new building. This is just one of the many field activities that provide opportunities for CT students to apply classroom-learned skills and techniques.
Appreciation Message from PCC Alumni Attending UH-Hilo Alii and Aloha— I've walked all corners of Palau Community College (PCC). I know the faculty, staff and students. I know the names of the buildings around campus and the names of the plants, from the tropical almond (Terminalia catappa) tree out front to the many species of Halimeda that inhabit the intertidal area of Taoch er a Idederach. I remember I walked around PCC campus with my head held high
and with confidence. I was confident in the things I was taught and the services
I received. More importantly, I was confident in those around me, the
PCC family. I was also walking around full of pride for I knew I was going to be
a better individual when all was said and done. After all, I've had the
greatest mentors, advisors, instructors, and friends. |

Michael `Mike' Moser, Coordinator of Career and Workforce Development at Windward Community College and a trainer of the University of Washington, arrived last weekend to conduct a week-long Annual Performance Report (APR) training workshop to Talent Search (TS), Upward Bound (UB) Classic, Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS) program staff. With the new changes to the Annual Performance Report (APR) objectives and requirements, it is important that the three TRIO programs understand and are able to produce data that is needed for the compilation of their APR, which will be submitted in November. The staff underwent two days, Tuesday and Wednesday, of training at the Continuing Education (CE) training room. They learned how to use the updated version of the File Maker Pro- database software to generate information needed for the APR. According to TS Director Laura Mangham, the training was very important as it provided insight into how to student data and information may be recorded in accordance with the new objectives and requirements. Additionally, Moser was able to update the File Maker Pro, making it efficient for record keeping and reporting. He also helped TS create files to generate and keep accurate data, produce student progress reports, disclose student information,
|
and access resources online. He also configured computers, enabling users to access and share files conveniently. Larry Wakakoro of the UBMS program said that with the APR deadline approaching, the training was very informative and useful as they are now better prepared to incorporate their information with the new changes in objectives and requirements. Aside from the APR and database training, Moser also made recommendations to the TS and UBMS programs in how to prepare for a site visit. Aside from the APR training, UB Classic Director, Kuye Belelai also asked Moser to conduct an evaluation and site visit for the UB program. All program files including random student files, physical progress files, and other necessary documents were given to Moser to examine and determine whether or not the UB program is abiding with the laws and regulations of the United States Department of Education. A series of staff interviews were also conducted. Belelai added that evaluation and site visits are only conducted when suspicion of unlawful acts arise, however, with the start of their new grant cycle, she requested Moser for a site visit as she wanted to ensure that the UB program is on the right track. Belelai said that copies of Moser's final report will be sent to the President of the College. Moser will conclude training today with database programming for UB Classic. TS, UB Classic, and UBMS extend their appreciation to Moser for his professional training and guidance in making PCC TRIO programs even better service providers to students.

Over thirty (30) new and continuing students attended the orientation. Students from the Airai State cohort program were also present at the orientation, with their instructor Johnson Joshua. Mary Rengulbai attended the orientation on behalf of Airai State Government. President of the College Dr. Patrick U. Tellei gave the welcoming remarks and reiterated the importance of the program and its commitment to meeting the educational needs of the students. Tellei said that the program is unique as it has an "open-entry, open-exit" policy which allows the adult students who already have responsibilities at home and work to take courses when convenient, and at their own pace. After Dr. Tellei gave the opening remarks, Dean of Continuing Education Willy O. Wally emphasized the importance of the program and its positive impact on their lives and their families. Social Science Professor Tutii Joe Chilton who was also invited to the orientation, gave a brief remark, urging students to work hard. |
He shared his own struggles in school and his experience in the military. He shared with students that it is important to have a vision, and a goal to work towards. "The best students always knew where they were going. It didn't matter that they had money, or came from the best families or lived in the best places or had the best I.Q. They succeeded because they knew where they were going", he said. Director of the AHS Program Laura S. Mangham concluded the orientation with the introduction of teachers. Howard Charles, Laura Ierago Miles, Karen Mobel, Masaharu Tmodrang, Fuana Temarsel, Seit Andres, and Dilmai J. Saiske will teach classes this Fall Semester which will begin on September 8, 2008.
