Based on the results of the Student Trustee and Student Senate general election held last Friday, September 07, 2007 at Mesekiu Bai, over 200 students exercised their right to vote for those they believed would better serve them. As a matter of fact, the voters' turn-out was 34.52%. Official results showed that Leena Muller, an exemplary environmental/marine science student, won by a landslide against Evadne K. Nakamura. Muller will serve as the Student Trustee to the Board of Trustees for term, 2007-2008. In accordance with the Student Body Association (SBA) constitution, Emrei Takeo took over the position of the SBA President and remains as such after former SBA President Ramon Adelbai graduated this past May. She continues to hold the position until next year's general election. Heston Aluka Kebou is the new Vice-President-Elect; Sasha Lirow- Secretary; Sheena Henry- Treasurer; Liane Smau and Shane S. Time Heals What Reason Cannot- Palau Community College joined the Republic in remembering 9/11 tragedy. It also hosted a national memorial service on Tuesday evening, September 11, 2007 on the grounds of the PCC campus. The memorial service was dedicated to remember the victims and their families and to memorialize the 6th year since the ghastly terrorist attacks that befell the United States of America on the ill-fated day of September 11, 2001.

Close to a hundred people attended the memorial service. Vice President Camsek Elias Chin, U.S. Charge d' Affaires Mark Bezner, PCC President Dr. Tellei, Senators, and government officials were among the many gathered to remember 9/11. Vice President Camsek Chin and U.S. Charge d'

Affaires Mark Bezner each delivered the special remarks recalling the tragic event of 9/11 and stressed the value of education in decreasing acts of terrorism and increasing understanding.

Songs from St. Joseph Choir, Koror Evangelical Church Choir, and PCC students made the ceremony all the more memorable as they sung hymns in tribute to the numerous lives, both young and old that were abruptly ended six years ago this Tuesday. Many from the community including a number of PCC staff and students also joined the observance.

In 2001, two weeks after the attacks, Palau Community College held the first national memorial service to mourn the victims, and has since then organized memorial services to remember those who lost their lives and loved ones during the tragic event of September 11.

Public Health Officials Propose Program at PCC

Public Health officials working at various Pacific Islands conducted a presentation on Wednesday at Baderirt building proposing a public health program right here at PCC. Dr. Gregory Dever of the Palau Ministry of Health, Professor Sitaleki `Ata'ata Finau of Massey University in Auckland, New Zealand, and Dr. Giuseppe G. Cuboni of Epidemiology and International Public Health who is currently residing in Pohnpei, FSM made a presentation on Human Resources Development for Public Health in and for Micronesia as a summary of the proposal to launch a public health program at PCC.

The three public health experts first explained the current status of public health services in Micronesia. Then, they went on to stress the importance of creating such a program; its goal; anatomy of the proposed program; academic program

framework; career-ladder; the five public health specialities or disciplines; competencies, etc.

This proposed public health program will prioritize those who are already on-the-job who have been trained on-the-job by other people who were also trained the same way. Such a program will also provide a pathway for future public health advocates; provide real training to already on-the-job employees; thereby, stopping the uneven level of untrained workers working in the hospital.

BITS AND PIECES...

PCC Bids a Warm Farewell to APU Professor and Students...

Professor Nobuyuki Hatada, a Tourism & Hospitality professor at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) in Japan returned to PCC last month with tourism students to conduct field research on sustainable tourism. Hatada and his students were here for three weeks visiting with some local businesses as well as government agencies to conduct interviews for their research work.

This is the sixth group of scholars from Ritsumeikan-APU to come to Palau to conduct studies in Sustainable Tourism since Palau Community College signed a memorandum of agreement with the Japanese university in the fall of 2001. The agreement promotes, among other things, the exchange of faculty and students between the two institutions, such as the current visit by Professor Hatada and his students. Professor Hatada and his students stayed on campus at the PCC dormitories. PCC bids farewell to Professor Hatada and his APU students from Japan and we look forward to strengthening our already warm relationship which PCC shares with the Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University.

Succeeding in College- Part 2
Taken from Study Tips.com at www.how-to-study.com

Stay Physically and Emotionally Healthy
You will need to be at your best to succeed in college. This means taking care of your body and maintaining a good frame of mind.
· Get enough sleep.
· Don't rely on coffee and drinks that contain high doses of caffeine to provide you with energy. Foods such as pasta, peanut butter, non-sugar cereals, and fresh fruit are healthy alternatives to provide the energy you need.
· Avoid junk foods. Fast food is convenient but usually not good for you.
· Use the services of the student health office. These services typically include emergency treatment, low cost examinations, and low cost or free medication.
· Use the services of the counseling office. The professionals there can help you overcome feelings of loneliness, depression, and anxiety.
Choose a Professor Carefully
In college you get to select your schedule of classes. Most classes offer more than one section so that you can choose not just the day and time, but the professor who is teaching that section. Often you will find student ratings of professors on the Internet. You can get even more feedback by talking to other students. Try to choose a professor who demonstrates the following characteristics.
· Maintains adequate office hours.
· Provides constructive feedback.
· Adapts to different styles of learning.
· Grades fairly.
· Is highly competent in the subject being taught.
· Establishes clear and reasonable requirements.
· Provides a positive learning environment.
Work With Your Advisor
As a student you will be assigned a faculty advisor to help you with both academic and career issues. It is up to you to get the most out of this guidance.
· Know your advisor's office location, schedule of office hours, and contact information.
· Schedule an appointment with your advisor at any time you have problems that affect your academic performance.
· Consider your advisor's ideas when selecting your major or at any time you are considering changing your major or career goals.
· Have specific questions in mind whenever meeting with your advisor.
Make Good Use of the Library
You are going to spend a lot of your time in college at the library. Take full advantage of this major resource.
· Get to know the resources of the library as soon as you get to college.
· Learn to use its computer resources and card catalogs.
