The University of Guam (UOG) President Dr. Harold Allen visited Palau during the Independence Day holiday weekend accompanied by his wife Mrs. Allen and some of the university's top executive. Among those accompanying President Allen were Vice President of University and Community Engagement Jeff D.T. Barcinăs, TRIO Programs Director Yoichi Rengiil and Alumni Relations Director Peter Roy Martinez. The purpose of the visit was to meet with Palau UOG alumni and also speak with individuals, especially high school students interested in pursuing college degrees at the University of Guam. Arriving on island last Friday, President Allen and his top executives had the opportunity to meet with Palau High School Principal Theodore Borja, who is a UOG alumni himself, and talked to a number of Palau High School students about UOG and its various programs and services specific to students in the Micronesian region. While on island, the group also took the liberty to participate in the 12th Independence Day celebrations, attending the

ceremonies at the new Capitol in Melekeok on Sunday and the boat races at the Japan-Palau friendship bridge on Monday. During their final day on island, the UOG officials held a meeting on at the PCC Cafeteria with Palau UOG alumni to discuss issues of mutual interest. Among those invited to attend the meeting were PCC Chairperson of the Board of Trustees Bilung Gloria G. Salii, Board Member Valeria Toribiong, President Dr. Patrick U. Tellei and Vice President Jay Olegeriil. During the meeting, President Allen thanked Palau Community College for its support and presented a $1000 dollars donation to the PCC officials, saying that the donation is for the PCC Endowment Fund. This is the second time that UOG has donated to the Endowment Fund. A contribution of $350 was made back in 2003 during President Allen's first visit to Palau Community College. PCC President Dr. Patrick U. Tellei thanked Allen and his delegation for their generosity and presented them with gifts as a token of appreciation. The group returned to Guam on Tuesday night.

PCC Library Technician, Pioria Faungy wins German Website Contest

A contest was held on September 11-25 in which everyone was invited to identify a certain bird presented. The contest, called "Guess What?", named PCC Library staff, Pioria Faungy, the winner after she identified the photograph of Palau's National Bird, the Biib, in its scientific and english name. Among four contestants, Faungy was the first to turn in her answers and was able to win the prize, seasonal posters in which a single tree is shown through spring, summer, fall, and winter. According to Faungy, the contest came from a German website about nature. The website, www.nature detektive.de, still presents more contests about naming various things of nature.

Guam Harley- Davidson Visit PCC Campus

The Guam Harley-Davidson bike riders arrived on campus near Track and Field on Thursday to showcase their prized bikes. This whole event was organized between Shimbros and PCC to display Harley-Davidson bikes to PCC Auto Mechanic students. PCC students took this perhaps once in a lifetime one-on one opportunity to ask questions regarding the bikes' features, maintenance, etc. As part of the event, the students took rounds riding with the bike owners to Ngarachamayong and back. It was a fun and educational approach to learning for the students.

and/ or the Japan Embassy in Palau. It is an intense 2 week program in Osaka, Japan that highlights the major historical, traditional, and modern Japanese culture. This past month, Ltelatk Fritz was one of 72 participants from 67 different regions, ranging from South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific Islands. Through this exchange, Fritz was able to make friends with people from neighboring Pacific Islands, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Chile, Brazil, Ghana, Egypt, and Tunisia. All 72 participants along with their tour guides traveled on buses, bullet trains, and ferry boats to major historical sites such as the Osaka Catsle, Hiroshima Bomb Dome and Museum, and Edo Museum in Tokyo. They also visited the Great Buddha Hall in the Todaiji Temple in Nara, the Kingakuji (Golden Pavilion) in Kyoto, the famous temple and pagodas on the island of Miyajima, and the Meiji Jingu in Tokyo. These sites offered a first-hand experience of Japanese traditions and customs. Fritz was very fortunate to have been a part of this study tour. She was able to participate in the tour as a tourist; thus, learned so much as a student at the same time. She was able to observe the many aspects of Japanese hospitality. Fritz was amazed at the foundation's planning and organization because the excursions went on smoothly and on time, as scheduled.
During this program, Fritz came to a startling realization that Palau's tourism industry needs to put more effort in providing better maps and guides for tourists to use. Fritz stated that detailed maps that illustrate major landmarks, supermarkets, department stores, restaurants, etc. could help enrich a visitor's experience here in Palau. She also stated that this trip has given her a new perspective on life. The knowledge, experience, and new network of colleagues she has gained are invaluable. She hopes to use it to further her academic, as well as future career goals and objectives.

Fritz encourages all the students and staff of Palau Community College, especially to all those majoring in Tourism and Hospitality to try out for this wonderful program next year.
