A study tour and student forum on water issues was held in Okinawa, Japan from the 15th- 22nd of October 2006. PCC Environemental/ Marine Science (EMS) student, Shelley Remengesau was fortunate to be accompanied by one of the science instructors, Ms. Vernice Yuji, to attend the event. During their stay in Okinawa, they participated in a study tour of water systems including man-made and underground dams, caves, and desalination and salt plants. |
The highlight of their trip was the desalination plant where seawater was converted to freshwater by reverse osmosis process. The remaining seawater, after this process, is used to make salt. They not only learned the importance of water to the Japanese people but experienced it as well. They also learned that the water issues the Japanese are having are no different than those we face. However, their water issues are much greater because their surface water is scarce and, thus they are obliged to practice water rationing throughout their islands. Toward the end of their stay, Ms. Remengesau gave a presentation entitled "Water Quality of Palau: Ngerikiil Watershed Overview", which stressed greatly the importance of the watershed to the states of Koror and Airai. Their trip was altogether educational and culturally enriching. Ms. Remengesau would personally like to thank Ms. Yuji for accompanying her on the trip. |

BITS AND PIECES... More Donate
to PCC... PCC would like to thank Chairperson Bilung Gloria G. Salii who
donated approximately 25 lulk trees (similar to banyan trees) and many other plants
to PCC. Chairperson Salii also donated bananas and amra fruit (titimel) to
PCC Cafeteria. Cafeteria staff made titimel juice and the dorm residents, who
have never tried such local lemonade, tried the titimel juice for the first time
and really enjoyed it. Thanks Message of Appreciation I would like to extend my sincerest appreciation and heartfelt gratitude to all the PCC staff who showed their support when my father passed away earlier this month. I will never forget all of you for the generous contributions you made to me and my family. Most especially, the cafeteria staff that supported me in this time of sorrow. Once again, thank you all and God Bless! Lucky Beketaut |

Hopefully we can work together as a team to achieve our goal to establish a practical way to breed economically important fishes in Palau such as rabbit fish, groupers, and if possible mullets, milkfish, and perhaps prawns". Their project is in collaboration with the Marine Resources Office; therefore, De Los Santos will be working at both the Marine Resources office in Malakal for the saltwater species and the CRE- PCC station in Ngermeskang, Ngeremlengui for freshwater species. For more information about De Los Santos' program at PCC- CRE, please call 488-2746. Scholarship Opportunity!!!
