Retired Carpentry Instructor Interred in Home State of Ngardmau |
The late Onesimo Santos, a retired PCC carpentry instructor who taught at the college for nearly three decades was laid to rest last Sunday in his home state of Ngardmau. Santos, 66, taught at the college for 28 years and many in the college community including PCC President Dr. Patrick U. Tellei attended |
his funeral. President Tellei and college staff, some of whom former colleagues of Santos paid their last respect and joined the funeral gathering in mourning. Santos who contributed a great deal to the college's carpentry program, especially during its pioneering years in the early seventies contributed 28 years of his life, enthusiastically sharing his expertise with his students, beginning with MOC and through the transition when MOC became PCC in 1993. He was a hardworker, starting |
and pass it on to the next chief. PCC President Tellei, who is related to the Santos family, perfomed the passing of title ritual. The PCC family extends its sincerest condolences and deepest sympathies to the family of Onesimo Santos. Our love, prayers, and best wishes are with the Santos' family in hopes that they can find peace and assurance that he is in God's hands now. |
Because Santos was a traditional chief in the state of Ngardmau holding the title, Arbedul ra Tebelak, a traditional ritual was held at the conclusion of the funeral to officially remove the title from Santos |

PCC Helps College of Marshall Islands' Transformation |
College of Marshall Islands' (CMI) is currently undergoing drastic changes and thus, as part of its transformation process, CMI hired Ms. Robin Kupferman, a contractor, to document what other regional community colleges such as PCC are offering in terms of programs, services, and buildings, and by comparing and contrasting what other schools have, CMI can hopefully have a better idea on what changes they need to make in order to improve their college for their students and teachers. |
Kupferman arrived last week to tour around PCC campus, interview students and some PCC employees, and will later make a documentary that CMI would be using to help improve their college. She has about one month of filming to conduct at six colleges in the Pacific, most of which are in the Micronesian region. They include the College of Micronesia-FSM, Pohnpei Campus; Palau Community College; Guam Community College; Northern Marianas College; and Windward College in Honolulu, Hawaii. The new grant proposal will enable the Upward Bound Program to continue its much needed services to college-bound high school students. The Upward Bound Pogram is a member of the Federal TRIO program which gets its funding from the US Department of Education. |

"TUESDAY NIGHT" PROGRAM |
(Continued from page
1) So far, Kupferman has visited, COM-FSM, and now PCC. She departed the island on Monday and is heading to GCC, NMC, and then Windward College. This documentary is set for next year and will be a 15-20 minutes video. It will only depict what is positive from the schools rather than the negative so that CMI can choose from the various recommendations to replicate and improve their college. CMI is currently implementing accreditation requirements asked by the accrediting commission of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). |
Every last Tuesdays of the month, PCC Student Life office organizes a meeting called "Tuesday Night Program". This program is meant to educate and discuss issues that may help students in and outside of the classroom. For instance, this past September's topic focused on STD/ HIV/ AIDS 101 and was presented by the Ministry of Health's Program Administrator Ms. Johanna Ngiruchelbad and Program staff members Margaret Sisserson and Allyn Andrew. |
followed by a prayer. The program then started with the topic on STD and the types that are common in Palau and how it is transmitted from one person to another. Towards the end of the program, the students came to a unanimous decision that the clinic, that is supposed to be available on campus sometime soon, be called the "Preventive Clinic". This is an educational program that helps students with their academic and social life. |
