President Returns from PPEC and DOI Conference in Guam

PCC President Dr. Patrick U. Tellei

After attending the 2007 Secretary of Interior's Island Business Opportunities Conference last week in Guam, President Tellei returned earlier this week. While attending the Island Business Opportunities Conference, President Tellei met with representatives of various higher education service providers. He also met with officials from Pacific Post-secondary Educational Council (PPEC) for which the College is a member to discuss collaborative work that might be able to help PCC further meet its obligations under the laws of Palau and federal grant obligations.

While attending a conference in Guam, Richard C. Trigg made a special trip to Palau to meet with Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Program Director, Josephine Ulengchong last Friday. Upon meeting with Ulengchong, Trigg also had the opportunity to meet President Dr. Tellei.

Trigg decided to come to Palau so that he can meet with Ulengchong and any other workforce partners on how ETA might better collaborate and support Palau's continued workforce development efforts.

Environmental/Marine Science Club Monitors Coral City
By: Shelley Remengesau, EMS Student

EMS students monitoring near the Coral City (Ebiil Channel) in Ngarchelong State during the Independence Day fishing derby.

In celebration of Palau's 13th Independence Day, a fishing derby was held in the waters of Ngarchelong State. Given that the site of the derby was near Coral City (Ebiil Channel), a conservation area, the Ebiil Association had sought assistance from the Environmental/Marine Science (EMS) Club to monitor the site during the event. The club members were joined by friends and individuals from the Ebiil Association and Palau Conservation Society to monitor the site. While the task was specific to monitoring the area, the club members were grateful to what the task brought with it: a visit to Coral City!

Given that the topic of coral reefs is one of science's most renowned aspects, everyone very much appreciated what had turned out to be a great class on corals. The corals were just beautiful! There's no other way of putting it. It was an exposure that was both interesting and educational. Therefore, despite what was indeed a rough boat ride due to the high seas, the EMS club regards Coral City as having been "worth the ride"! The club officers and members would like to thank Ebiil Association for a wonderful opportunity and personally thank Geraldine, Jade, Aluka, and Kellael for accompanying them on the trip.

New Structural Engineer-AutoCAD Designer Arrives

Chester Paran Lelis

The College welcomes the new arrival of the Structural Engineer-AutoCAD Designer, Chester Paran Lelis who arrived yesterday morning. Young and full of new ideas, Lelis will primarily be designing the new library which is expected to be completed next year. He will also be designing any other architectural tasks assigned by the President of the College.

Considering that he worked as an architectural designer/sales executive for Union Galvasteel Corporation in the Philippines and has a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture from the University of Mindanao, he is well equipped to fulfill his responsibilities. Some of his responsibilities include drafting and reviewing construction drawings for compliance and adherence to building specifications; coordinate with contractors in every phase of the construction process; and preparing work plans for construction forces.

"I am happy and excited. My new job is both challenging and interesting, but I also see it as an opportunity to grow as a person as well as in my profession and begin to go beyond my limits and explore the best of my capabilities", says Lelis.

Message of Appreciation

On behalf of the Maech family, Akilina, Abel, and Hamilton Maech would like to extend their sincerest appreciation and heartfelt gratitude to all PCC staff. Your support and generosity during our time of sorrow will not be forgotten. God Bless!

SSS-Project Beacon Kicks Off FALL 2007

By: SSS-Project Beacon Peer Counselors/Tutors

On Thursday and Friday, October 4 & 5, Study Marathons were conducted at the SSS-Project Beacon tutoring center. The two days were devoted to helping students review for their mid-term exams, since mid-term exams were scheduled from October 8 to 12, 2007. One hundred seventeen (117) students participated in the study marathons. Aside from English, Math and Science students that participated, we also had students from IT 105, CO 110, HP 180 & 181, OA 112, 211 & 210, CS 100 & 213, SS 189, JP 109, HI 159& 179, TH 101 & 115 and BA 110, 130 & 122. Instructors and tutors kept busy, hopping from one student to another, helping them with reviews. A number of students studied in groups, while others opted to study on their own. At times it got too crowded, that spill-over groups occupied the main SSS-Project Beacon Office. SSS-Project Beacon staff donated to provide a "Tet Buai"…basket filled with betel nut, pepper leaves, and lime to tidy the students on the Thursday study marathon.

During the Friday study marathon, the CRE Office donated snacks and refreshments to sustain the students while they studied. A big HOLLA to CRE from the students for supporting the study marathon. Hopefully all students that participated will pass their mid-term exams with flying colors.

Students having their workshop with SSS staff.

Previous activities were held as well during the earlier part of this semester to welcome students back to school. On September 21, 2007 (Friday afternoon), an activity was held at the Tutoring Lab to welcome new participants to the program. A total of thirty two (32) students attended the activity which began with an "Ice-Breaker," followed by a mini-workshop on "Time Management." The "Ice Breaker" was necessary and appropriate since the participants were new to the program and we wanted to create an opportunity for them to know each other and to feel welcome and at home with the program staff. It was also

crucial that "Time Management" be the initial topic in our series of workshops to be offered this semester, considering that a majority of the attendees were incoming college students, and it was the beginning of a new semester. A "Time Management Academic Kit" was introduced, and provided to the participants to help them get organized. Based on the workshop evaluations, the new participants rated the overall workshop as excellent, and the content material as something useful that can benefit them as college students. A matinee was provided afterwards for those who were free in the late afternoon. Another afternoon of matinee was held on September 28, 2007 (Friday afternoon), for continuing program participants since there was not enough space to accommodate them in the first matinee held. A total of thirty six (36) students participated. As usual, the matinees were followed by questionnaires to give students the opportunity to practice their analytical and writing skills.

SSS clients enjoy a matinee after the workshop concluded.
