The Faculty Senate Association (FSA) proudly presents its official logo which was designed by one of the association's dedicated members, Johvanna Yaoch, and adopted by the body during its November 1st meeting. The Palau Community College Faculty Senate Association, comprising of full-time instructors and counselors was founded decades ago when the College was still the Micronesian Occupational Center/MOC. This year is an exciting time for the association and its members who have worked diligently on a number of remarkable changes that are of historical significance including the creation of their official logo, amendment of an over ten-year old bylaws, and the development of the

association's statement of mission/vision. While faculty membership in this association is not mandatory, its total membership is representative of 95% of the full-time instructors and counselors of Palau Community College. The association exists to represent the official interests and needs of its members, protect the rights and privileges of its members, assist each member on any matter conducive to his/her being an employee of the College, and work mutually with the Palau Community College President and Administration on matters affecting teaching and learning. The association's officers for the 2007 2008 academic year are Wilma Sukrad (President), Vicki Maui (Vice President), Soledad Garcia (Treasurer) and Karen Miovas (Secretary).

A Strategy for Reading Textbooks
Taken from Study Tips.com at www.how-to-study.com

SQRW is a four-step strategy for reading and taking notes from chapters in a textbook. Each letter stands for one step in the strategy. Using SQRW will help you to understand what you read and to prepare a written record of what you learned. The written record will be valuable when you have to participate in a class discussion and again when you study for a test. Read to learn what to do for each step in SQRW.

Survey.
Surveying brings to mind what you already know about the topic of a chapter and prepares you for learning more. To survey a chapter, read the title, introduction, headings, and the summary or conclusion. Also, examine all visuals such as pictures, tables, maps, and/or graphs

and read the caption that goes with each. By surveying a chapter, you will quickly learn what the chapter is about.

Question.
You need to have questions in your mind as you read. Questions give you a purpose for reading and help you stay focused on the reading assignment. Form questions by changing each chapter heading into a question. Use the words
who, what, when, where, why, or how to form questions. For example, for the heading "Uses of Electricity" in a chapter about how science improves lives, you might form the question "What are some uses of electricity?" If a heading is stated as a question, use that question. When a heading contains more than one idea,

A Message from an Alumni at
Gonzaga University

Julita Kobeney, a PCC alumni from the Marshall Islands who graduated on 2006 with an AAS in Office Administration and is currently studying at Gonzaga University
.

Since I left Palau Community College, I have been visiting the college through the website. I love reading the Mesekiu's News on the College website and would like to say that I am very proud of the College. I would like to congratulate the president of the RMI Student Organization for the successful fundraising (car wash) they had recently which I read from the Mesekiu's News. I was very happy to see the changes happening with the RMI Student Organization. Many thanks to their advisors and College staff who assisted them.

I am here at Gonzaga University at Spokane Washington. I would like to

thank all the instructors and staff who helped me and prepared me to be a strong student. Studies are hard and there is more work to be done, but the training I received from Palau Community College has prepared me to be here at Gonzaga University. I am so proud to be called a PCC Alumni. When reading Mesekiu's News on the website, it brings so many emotions and at the same time, I feel really homesick, I consider Palau my home.

My regards and ALII to all the Marshallese students, my message to you is, "if what you are facing now seems to be hard, it is only a training to face the real world". Palau Community College is the best place to be and I know because I received my training and degree there. Advisors and counselors, thank you for all your support and assistance. Again, thank you to everyone and God Bless you all.

Sincerely,
Julita Kobeney

form a question for each idea. Do not form questions for the Introduction, Summary, or Conclusion.

Read.
Read the information that follows each heading to find the answer to each question you formed. As you do this, you may decide you need to change a question or turn it into several questions to be answered. Stay focused and flexible so you can gather as much information as you need to answer each question.

Write.
Write each question and its answer in your notebook. Reread each of your written answers to be sure each answer is legible and contains all the important information needed to answer the question.

As you practice using SQRW, you will find you learn more and have good study notes to use to prepare for class participation and tests.

HINT: Once you complete the Survey step for the entire chapter, complete the Question, Read, and Write steps for the first heading. Then complete the Question, Read, and Write steps for the second heading, and so on for the remaining headings in the chapter.
