OMIP Sponsors Air        Conditioner Repair/       Maintenance Training

Ten technicians from various departments at PPUC recently completed a 40-hour air conditioner maintenance and trouble-shooting class. Course activities were split between the PCC shop, and various job sites, with the class sometimes traveling to the national power plants in Aimeliik or Malakal. At these off-campus sites, the trainees were able to work on air conditioners that control the work environment temperature in the control rooms of the power plants. Under the supervision of their instructor Ramon Garcia, students conducted preventive maintenance and repair work on the air conditioner units.

Trainees included workers from the Aimeliik power plant: Bonifacio

EMT Trainees Receive Certificates
By: Usong Tellei, Mesekiu's News Workstudy Student

The graduation ceremony for the first Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program was held for the ten program participants this past Friday (Oct 31, 2008). The ceremony, held in the CE Training Room, featured speeches from Chief of Fire Benhart Baulechong, Dean of Continuing Education Willly Wally, Ministry of Health (MOH) representative Dr. Gregory Dever and program instructors from the Civic Action Team(CAT). The program regiment required a three (3) month commitment from the ten (10) participants, a total of 300 hours combined situational application and curriculum review. Program participants from the Ministry of Justice Fire and Rescue Division entered the program to acquire new emergency response skills for pre-assessment of accident victims on location or en route to the hospital.

This helps expedite emergency room doctor's diagnosis and treatment for these patients who for the most part are in critical and deteriorating conditions . For individuals in potentially critical conditions, the training undertaken by the program participants will be invaluable in saving lives. Instructors for the program were Dr. James Corbin from the Ministry of Health, and Dr. Montoya Gunn from the Civic Action Team. Both instructors were very proud of the participants for keeping up with the program's regimen, completing the necessary hours, and for scoring a high program average in the testing battery. Fire Chief Baulechong, who promoted the program amongst his staff, extended congratulations to the graduates in his speech during the certificate awarding ceremony. Dr. Gregory Dever, Director of the Belau National Hospital's clinical services commended both instructors and

the participants who put in the time and effort to complete the program. PCC Continuing Education Program, MOH representatives, and CAT members expect to see an expansion of the program for the second series of classes to be held next year. The expansion is planned to include participants from the state government level.

LS Students Tour Koror Public Library
By: Megan Beard, PCC Library Services Instructor

Last Thursday, students in the Library Service (LS 102) class toured the Koror Public Library to learn more about public library operations, budgeting, collections, and overall organization. Mary Arius, a PCC grad from the LS program and current librarian at Koror Public Library, led the tour and encouraged the LS students to complete the program. Over the next few weeks, the LS 102 class will be visiting other libraries in the area to learn about the differences and similarities in the different types of libraries and to see library operations first hand. For more information about the Library and Information Studies program at PCC, please contact Megan Beard at 488-3540.

Challenge Test and Tutoring for MA 95
By: Rose Aliven-Kohama

On October 27, 2008 the Challenge Test for MA95 was administered in rooms 68 and 69. This demanding test had a pass mark of 70%, or 21 corrects answers out of 30. Of the 71 students who took the test an elite 10 passed.
So congratulations to those students, but many other students nearly passed and too are deserving of commendation. With only 5 weeks left in the semester,

everyone still taking the course needs to stay in class and make sure they get the 70% average needed to pass the class and move on.
Also extra tutoring currently on offer for those taking MA95. Extra hours for guidance are available on Monday to Thursday at both 10:00-11:00am and 3:00-4:00pm in room 32. Some students have improved tremendously after coming regularly to this tutoring. This one-on-one tutoring and small group sessions, combined with more opportunity to ask questions, has helped these students to grow in confidence and better their grades. With only 1 or 2 chapters left to cover in the semester, it would be wise for all to take advantage of the tutoring hours on offer to ensure they pass come December.
