In addition, the success of any community college is dependent on the commitment of the community which it serves. PCC Librarian Creates LS Scholarship for Students

(l-r) Gretchen Reynolds with President Dr. Tellei

Gretchen Reynolds, PCC librarian, and her husband Assistant Attorney General Fredrick Reynolds have generously made a $300 dollar check as a gift to Palau Community College to fund an annual scholarship for the Library and Information Services (LS) Program beginning next 2007-2008 school year. In hopes of making a positive impact for students facing challenges of pursuing

their educational and professional goals, the Reynolds have committed to personally fund a $300 scholarship each year to be awarded to a student of the LS program for fees and textbooks, to be administered through the PCC scholarship program. Developing the Library and Information Services degree program over the past two years has meant a great deal to Mrs. Reynolds, personally and professionally. She came to realize that her admiration and respect for the students of the LS program is greater than any other aspect of the program. The vast majority of LS students are full-time professionals, full-time mothers, full-time students, and active members of the library community. It is their dedication and motivation that inspires Mrs. Reynolds each day and propels her to create the Library and Information Services

Scholarship to aide in their continued success. Mrs. Reynolds thanks everyone for the opportunity to make this contribution and for the experience of being a part of the PCC family. She would also like to take this opportunity and thank the President for his leadership and his admirable dedication to the success of PCC students. She looks forward to seeing PCC grow, to seeing its students achieve great success, and to renewing this scholarship every year.

President Tellei, on behalf of the PCC family, would also like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds for their contributions they have made to Palau and PCC, specifically in developing the LS program. He would also like to wish them both the best and a safe return as they move back to U.S. later this month.

present at the conference, including Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo who will be delivering the keynote address.

Ms. Remengesau was chosen because she submitted, on time, an essay entitled, "Ensuring our Future: A Complementary Environment and Economy". She will attend the conference through a stipend from the association and through the sponsorship of Continental Airlines. Gerald Cruz, Chairman of the association said, " I am delighted that students around the region have seen the importance of financial management of funds. I hope that Shelley will continue in the direction she has chosen, to the benefit of Palau in the future. We need special people to move the legacy of

caring fiscal responsibility forward through the generations". Executive Director Daniel Roland of the association thanked sponsors of the association and the conference for their support of Remengesau, and said, "Her paper obviously impressed the judges at PCC. It may well be that in the years ahead this student will be approached to consider public service. I hope that she will  consider responsible board membership of a fund as a worthwhile service office. Both public and private sector funds need talented citizens to sit on their boards. Shelley shows the sort of talent our island communities need. I hope to see her serving Palau in the years to come". All the PCC Board Members, PCC President Dr. Tellei, and Instructor Robert Ramarui will be accompanying Ms. Remengesau to the conference.

Student Life Holds October "Tuesday Night" Program

While others were walking around with their faces painted and wearing Halloween customs trick-or-treating, about 98 of the PCC students were having an educational and fun program at the PCC cafeteria.

            Maura Gordon and Omar Basilius
The program's theme was about substance abuse prevention, with special guests, Program Manager Maura Gordon and Community Liaison Officer Omar Basilius from the State Incentive Grant Office. This office is under the Behavioral Health of the Ministry of Health. The program began with the Kosraean group singing the program's theme song about being drug-free. Then the guest speakers gave a brief introduction before presenting their video entitled "Tweaked", a video about substance abuse. The video featured the types of substance abuse, former users' comments, life-styles of addicts, and even the terrifying consequences that these addicts cause to their family members. After a very educational  video,

it was time to relax and enjoy a couple of dance performances from the Palau group and the Chuukese group and refreshments. Harter Hertin, a PCC student from Yap State commented, "I learned alot from the video, more than before. I also enjoyed the performances. I can't wait to come to the next "Tuesday Night" program. Whitni Kloulubak, a Palauan PCC student, also commented, "The program was really good because it makes students become aware of the bad things out there and it also helps prevent them from using drugs. The most interesting, but sad part of the video is where the addicts abuse their children to the extremes". Petra Layan, a PCC student from Yap, also commented, "The movie can help anyone from drinking and doing drugs. The performances were fun too. I can't wait to show our state activity next program.
