Athena Wally

Athena Wally, the daughter of Palau Community College Continuing

Education Dean Willy Wally and Veronica Antonio will appear in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges 2007 edition elite group. The Who's Who program is a nationally recognized institution of the American academic community. Over the past 70 years, more than 2,000 colleges have adopted this program as a part of their campus honors. The program was designed to recognize outstanding academic achievement and student leadership regardless of one's financial ability to participate. Athena Wally

graduated from George B. Harris Elementary School, graduated as salutatorian at Palau High School, attended PCC for a year, and transferred to the University of Hawaii, Hilo. She has been on academic deans list since. She is graduating with two bachelors this December 2006, in Political Science and Psychology with high honors. Athena will be coming home to visit her family, and still deciding between a law school and medical school afterwards.

Congratulations Athena!

Yap State Election Held at PCC

Yapese in Palau voting for their Yap State 2006 Elections

Earlier this week, all the Yapese here on the island had the opportunity to cast their votes for their state elections here on PCC Campus. There are nearly a hundred Yapese citizens in Palau, but only 31 voted. Mendilla F. Harong, a PCC student, is the Yap State Leader who oversaw and facilitated the elections on campus. Results of the election will be available in the next issue.

SSS- Project Beacon's October Activities

October had been an extremely busy month for SSS-Project Beacon and its participants, filled with enrichment and fun! October began with program instructors and peer tutors assisting in the study hall at the dorm every Tuesday and Thursday evenings, tutoring students who are willing to work hard for academic success. An average of about 12 dorm residents a night had been utilizing the evening tutoring services. Hopefully more residents will take advantage of the tutoring services as the program instructors and peer tutors continue to assist in the study hall for the semester. Striving for academic success is a continuous process and it is important that students utilize all available services to achieve that success. Towards the middle of October there were more activities such as the study skill workshops, "The Art of Avoiding Procrastination" and "Effective Communication" held both on the main campus and at the dorms.

Thirty-five to forty-five participants attended each of these workshops and left with helpful tips on how to avoid procrastination and have better communication skills. After each of these workshops, the participants enjoyed watching movies. The movies were not only enjoyable to the students who participated but also provided invaluable lessons on certain moral values such as being true to one's self as well as to others and also taught the value of education. At the end of each movie, students practiced their analytical thinking and writing by answering questionnaires identifying the main points and highlights of the movie. Then, on Halloween night, SSS- Project Beacon hosted a "Halloween Bash" for the students. There was much excitement in the air as the Bash consisted of the first ever Project Beacon Halloween

costume contest which was followed by a couple of movies that appropriately scared the participants! The costume contest awarded prizes to two top winners and first runner ups with the categories being the scariest and the funniest costume. As it was a first for everyone, only seven students brave enough to defy the snickering and much ribbing from 35 fellow students dressed up and showed their Halloween spirit. The winner for the scariest costume was Nena Singeo closely followed by Francine Omelau who got the prize for first runner up. Hercules Emilio had the funniest costume, along with Thomas Marcello. Congratulations to the contest winners as well as the other contestants! The fun continued as about 75 participants crowded to watch a couple more scary movies.
SSS- Project Beacon thanks all who took the time and made the effort to attend the activities because your participation contributed greatly to the success of the "
Halloween Bash."

PCC Students Explore Peleliu

"Are we going to see Ngermelt?" This was the question that most SSS-Project Beacon participants kept asking. On Nov. 3rd, 87 students comprising of SSS-Project Beacon participants and dorm residents, with 5 staff/ counselors embarked on a journey to Peleliu. The first site they visited was Orange Beach and then Memorial Peace Park that Friday afternoon. When they arrived at the Memorial Peace Park, the students were thrilled to see dolphins swimming along the coast, framed by the beautiful setting of the

sun. Mr. Tange Hesus described the importance of the Memorial Peace Park and also about the significance of Orange Beach. He informed them that contrary to popular belief, Orange Beach wasn't called that because of the bloodshed that turned the ocean water into red/orange color. Instead, it was the military code which indicated which military faction was to land on the specific coded beach. The students went into one of bunkers there and viewed the inside.

That evening, Ms. Reiko Kubarii demonstrated the art of creating coconut soup. Many of the students helped make the coconut soup, including Elword Mangresh, Simeon Fanesog, and Whitni Kloulubak. The rest of the students were playing a hilarious game of twister between State Organizations. Both Palau and Yap men & women representing their organization won. Counselor Winfred Recheiungel

To Err is human....
Last week's issue mistakenly printed wrong degrees for Mr. Carlton Grospy and Ms. Peggy Andreas in the Alumni Section at the back of the Mesekiu. Both Alumni graduated with certificates of achievement in their respective majors, not certificate of arts. Sorry Folks!

conducted a workshop on "Financial Aid The New SAP Policy and Credit Deficiency." Once the presentation was completed, the students were all ready to continue their sight-seeing. The first stop was White Beach, where a land grenade was seen on the beach, and bullet shells seen in the jungle. They then stopped at the Museum where the students signed in as visitors and took the time look at the war relics displayed inside. Then they went to Bloody Nose Ridge. There, another myth was busted. According to the soldiers that Mr. Hesus interviewed, there was never a Japanese lady who was on the ridge shooting at American soldiers as the story goes. Then they climbed the infamous 114 steps to the top of the ridge and saw the panoramic view around Peleliu. Afterwards, they

continued to their final destination, NGERMELT. The students rushed to dive into the cool water, while the "volunteer" cooks, McQuay Postol, Ephraim, Carl Innocencio, and Ngirailals Polloi brought their lunches. The SSS- Project Beacon participants and Staff, Dorm residents, and Student Life Staff, would like to thank Governor Jackson Ngiraingas and the people of Peleliu State for the opportunity to visit Peleliu and for the use of the State bus; Mr. & Mrs. Postol for the donation of his bus and van and also for the local food presented to the staff and peer tutors/counselors; Ms. Reiko Kubarii for the excellent coconut soup demonstration and for donating her truck; Huyuko Hiroichi for donating the coconut used for the soup demonstration; Louch for the donation of his bus; Mr. Nehace Singeo for the donation of his flat-bed; and Tange Hesus for the very informative tour; and to the bus drivers who were very patient during their tour. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Talent Search Holds Elementary Workshop

Talent Search Program held its first 2006-2007 Elementary workshop on Saturday November 02, 2006. The workshop was conducted to the students and parents as part of their orientation. The workshop started off with Laura Mangham introducing the program and the newly accepted participants to the program. After a brief introduction, Mrs. Mangham, proceeded with the first presentation by recognizing the students' efforts and how they are entitled for the praises because they have worked hard to succeed in their studies.

Ms. Vicky Maui, an instructor here at PCC, was invited to present her workshop on attitude. In Ms. Maui's presentation, she presented different types of attitude toward education and approaches taken to render the importance of attitude as a factor of educational progress. These workshops are provided to our children every year to give them encouragement so that they can continue with school and not drop-out. There would be other workshops provided to the Talent Search students throughout the year just to help these students succeed, and aim for better education in the future. Talent search is also encouraging any student who is interested to join the program to come and fill the application and get all the help you need to excel or succeed in your studies and prepare yourself for post secondary school. For more information, please call Talent Search office at 488- 2470/ 2471 ext. 267/ 276.
