PCC Holds 44th Commencement Exercises Today

The Palau Community College (PCC) holds its 44th Commencement Exercises at the College Cafeteria today beginning at 10:00a.m. The total number of graduates today stands at seventy six (76); forty nine (49) of them are PCC graduates who have chosen to participate in the ceremony. PCC's Adult High School Program will see twenty one (21) of its students receive their high school equivalency diplomas. Other graduates are six (6) students from the 2nd Substance Abuse and Addiction Counseling Program who will also receive their certificates/degrees during the ceremony.

The Valedictorian for the PCC graduating class of 2007 is Carmin Pipit who will receive an Associate of Science (AS) degree in Environmental Science. Pipit will deliver her own valedictory

message to the graduating class and the gathering at today's ceremony. Pipit attended George B. Harris Elementary School and Palau High School where she graduated with her high school diploma in 2001. Asked about her thoughts of being the class valedictorian, she said

that she never thought she'd end up as valedictorian. "I never thought I'd be valedictorian. My intention of beginning my education here at PCC was just to be a committed student. So, once they told me that I was chosen as Valedictorian, I was very surprised", she said. After graduation, Carmin plans to take a break and then begin her job hunt this summer.

The Valedictorian Award is given to the student (s) with the highest cumulative grade point average throughout their years of studies at PCC.

Student Trustee Bags Citizenship Award!

In addition to the Valedictory Award, the other much-coveted award at PCC commencement exercises is the Outstanding Citizenship Award. This award is given to the graduate based on his/her academic achievements, and just as important, also his/her outstanding participation and conduct in all facets of campus life and community services, contributions to the welfare of fellow students, and participation in recreational, social, and student government activities.

This year's recipient of the Outstanding Citizenship Award is Shane Salvador. A Student Trustee who served two consecutive terms on the PCC Board of Trustees from 2005-2007, Salvador is graduating with an Associate of Arts (AA) degree in Liberal Arts (LA). On behalf of Palau Community College (PCC) Board of Trustees, Faculty, and Staff, President Patrick U. Tellei is proud to convey his heartfelt congratulations to all PCC graduates, including graduates of Adult High School Class of 2007, and the 2nd Substance Abuse and Addiction Counseling Program under the collaboration of the Ministry of Health and Palau Community College. This is a memorable occasion for you and the College is proud to be part of your successful achievement and wishes you all the best in your future career endeavor.
The College also wishes to extend its congratulations to all graduates from Belau Modekngei School, Bethania High School, Emmaus High School, Mindszenty High School, Palau High School, and Palau Mission Academy. The College further extend its congratulations to all Palauan students who are graduating from colleges and high schools outside of the Republic of Palau. Your hard work and dedication have finally paid off and the only decision you face now is where to go from here. As the only accredited institution of higher learning in the Republic of Palau, Palau Community College is willing and eager to take on the challenge in serving you, especially the high school graduates. Shane Salvador, Outstanding Citizenship Award

At each commencement exercises, the College issues the Outstanding Student Award to deserving students. This award goes to members of the graduating class who have demonstrated high academic achievements, outstanding attitudes both inside and outside the classroom, self-motivation, and the desire to succeed in their chosen fields during their entire study at the College. This year, the College is proud to bestow this honor to seventeen (17) members of the graduating class of 2007, including the Valedictorian and the recipient of the Outstanding Citizenship Award. They are: Ramon Adelbai who is in Liberal Arts, Elwais Beketaut in Education- Elementary Education, Ltelatk Fritz in Tourism & Hospitality- Food & Beverage, Marla Ito in Liberal Arts, Mouais Kang-ichi in Liberal Arts, Ramsey Ngiraibai in Construction Technology, Hope Ngirmekur in Office Administration, Fusae Nobuo in Education- Early Childhood, Deanne Olkeriil in Office Administration, Michelle Ramos in Nursing, Delina Remengesau in Education- Special Education, Shelley Remengesau in Education- Secondary Education, Herelynna Skang in Education- Early Childhood, Tracey Tellei in Business Accounting, and Mark Tolenoa in Criminal Justice.

Address Class of 2007

PCC President Dr. Patrick U. Tellei has been chosen by the graduating Class of 2007 to deliver today's commencement address. This will be the first time President Tellei addresses a graduating class of his Alma-mater since he took the helm as president in early 1999. Graduating in 1980 with an Associate of Science (AS) degree in Construction Technology, President Tellei went on to pursue both his bachelor's and master's degree from the University of Hawaii- Manoa. He enrolled in the doctoral program at the University of San Diego/San Diego State University and received his doctorate degree in education in 2005. President Tellei is also the first alumni of Micronesia Occupational College/Palau Community College to serve as President of the College. President Tellei will also deliver the commencement address at Mindszenty High School tomorrow and Palau Mission Academy on Sunday.

UBMS Summer
Session to Start Soon

The Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) Program would like to announce that the Academic Year session has ended. Summer session will begin on June 11, 2007 until July 20, 2007. All participants must pick up their schedule for the summer session between the hours of 9am to 4pm during the week of June 4 to June 8, 2007. UBMS would also like to recognize the tutors this spring semester: Bedebii Chiokai (BMS), Shane Salvador (EHS), and Sheena Henry and Sholeh Hanser (PMA, MHS, PHS) and volunteer tutors Henry Yuri (BMS), Daisy Ulitch (BHS) for a job well done. The UBMS Office would also like to give special thanks and recognize the following PCC Environmental/Marine Science Majors for taking time of their schoolwork to tutor and mentor UBMS Students at the PCC site: Zilah Oiterong, Shelley Remengesau, Carmin Pipit, Leena Muller and John Stills.

Internship Scholarship to UH-Manoa


Shelley Remengesau, today's PCC graduate who is also the recipient of the UMEB Internship Scholarship at UH-Manoa.

Ms. Shelley Remengesau has been awarded the UMEB (Undergraduate Mentoring Environmental Biology) Internship Scholarship for Summer 2007 at University of Hawaii (UH)-Manoa. UMEB is an interdisciplinary program in environmental science funded by the National Science Foundation that provides an opportunity for students from the Pacific Islands to assist scientists and researchers from UH-Manoa in different research projects.

In addition to working with professionals in the field of science, Remengesau will be trained in different scientific techniques in research, participate in data gathering, data analysis, and is required to write a scientific paper on her summer project. The highlight of the training is a symposium where Remengesau will present her research paper to her peers, the program mentors, and alumni of the UMEB program.

Congratulations Shelley! The knowledge and skills you acquire from the training will add-on to the growing effort within the community of Palau to preserve, protect, and conserve the bio-diversity unique to Palau so we can continue to enjoy Palau and its natural beauty.

Remengesau will be graduating today as well and will depart the island tonight for her summer internship.

Foreign Language Classes Offered...

Continuing Education (CE) office is now offering a Basic Japanese Language class scheduled to begin on June 4, 2007 to July 25, 2007 (Mondays and Wednesdays only) from 6pm to 8pm at CE Training Room. CE is also offering Basic Tagalog Language class. Registration is now open for both language classes. For more information or registration, please call Taruu Nakamura or Leona Blaluk at 488-6223.

Techong Singeo (l), Sherilynn Madraisau, and Jackson McBride are three of the six graduates of the 2nd Substance Abuse and Addiction Counseling Program under the collaboration of the Ministry of Health and Palau Community College. They will also receive their Pacific Regional Certificates as Addiction Counselors today.

            
Darnelle Worswick is another graduate of the 2nd Substance Abuse and Addiction Counseling Program who will receive a Pacific Regional Certificate.

Class of 1982 (MOC)
Wilson Ongos - 1982 MOC graduate with a Certificate of Achievement (CA) in Small Engine & Outboard Marine Technology (SEOMT). Mr. Ongos worked as a Ngaremlengui State Legislator from 1992-2003. At present, Ongos is a National Public Works employee working at Ngaremlengui State Water System.

Class of 1981 (MOC)
Liza Ann Marbou - 1981 MOC graduate with a Certificate of Achievement (CA) in General Office Clerk (GOC). Ms. Marbou first started working as a Teacher at Maris Stella School in 1983. Then in 1992, she began working at Palau National Communications Corporation (PNCC) as a Head-End and International Operator and has been there since then.

Tommy Tadao Sakuma -
1971 MOC graduate with a Vocational Diploma (VDIP) in Carpentry (CARP). Mr. Sakuma was the first Student Body President and the first to open a Student Fund account in MOC. He was also the first to graduate and become a teacher at MOC. After a year, he began working at George B. Harris Elementary School as a Teacher in 1973. Then in 1974, he moved to Palau High School where he became a Vocational Teacher until his retirement in 2000.

Housing Hosts Dinner


The Office of Student Life and Housing hosted a dinner for all dormitory residents after final exams last week. The dinner which was organized by Director Deikola Olikong and her staff was to commend the studetns for their academic effort and also to congratulate the number of dorm residents who will be graduating during today's 44th Commencement Exercises.

The first alumni featured in the Alumni Notes section will be one of the honored guests on behalf of the President of the MOC/PCC Alumni Association while the other two will present the association's award to PCC student recipients.

Donates to Day Care Center

Special thanks to Atsuka Takeshita for her donation, arigatougozaimashita! PCC is a regular recipient of study materials for its Japanese language program and also employs numerous volunteers from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Our Condolences to PCC President Dr. Patrick U. Tellei on the untimely loss of his beloved father, Adelbai Rureor el Ngirauchuladokeu Ubal Tellei. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this most difficult time of sorrow and grief.
