Two Deserving Students Receive International Scholarships

Barbara Gbewonyo, freshman majoring in Liberal Arts.

Recobert Redhor, freshman majoring in Liberal Arts.

Originally from Ghana, Africa, Barbara Gbewonyo has tried over the years to apply for scholarships, but because of her citizenship, she has not been able to receive one. However, with her determination, Ms. Gbewonyo finally received recognition for all her hard work, internationally in fact, through the Grand Valley State University (GVSU) International Award of Distinction. This scholarship is valued at $8,000 dollars and is awarded to international students who have at least a 3.8 GPA from high school and PCC.

Another PCC student, Recobert Redhor, received international recognition for his hard work. Mr. Redhor was awarded the International Award of Merit in honor of GVSU alumni President Tommy E. Remengesau. Valued at approximately $5,000 dollars, this scholarship is

awarded to the student who has kept at least a 3.5 GPA since high school up until the first year of PCC.

As the school year ends, more and more students get recognized for their hard work and dedication. The College will also recognize its students who have accomplished much over the years and will be graduating this year through the 44th Commencement Exercise that will be held next week Friday, May 25th, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at PCC Cafeteria. This year's graduates will not only include PCC students, but also graduates of the Substance Abuse and Addiction Counseling under the collaboration of the Ministry of Health and PCC as well a Adult High School Class of 2007.

There are a total of ninety-four (94) students who are expected to graduate this year, but only seventy-two (72) will be able to attend the graduation: forty-eight (48) are PCC students; eighteen (18) are Adult High School students; six (6) are the Substance Abuse and Addiction Counseling students.

Come witness a family member, friend, or colleague graduate and join in the celebration of their achievements.

For further information about the 44th PCC Commencement Exercise, please contact Chair Deikola Olikong at 488-3036 or Secretary Lesley Adachi at 488-2470/2471 ext. 257.

PREL Official Visits the College

(l-r): Visiting guest, M. Kau'i Keliipio, Program Coordinator for the Indigenous People's Teacher Education Module (IPTEM); President Dr. Tellei, and Dr. A.J. (Sandy) Dawson, MENTOR Director/University of Hawaii at Manoa Professor poses for a picture in front of the College sign earlier this week.

The College was very fortunate this week with the arrival of Dr. A.J. (Sandy) Dawson, the Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL) MENTOR Director and University of Hawaii Professor.

On his first stop of his 19-day trip in the Micronesian islands, Dr. Dawson spent three days meeting with Ministry of Education (M.O.E.) officials, College officials, as well as the public schools to get feedback about the Palau Math Mentor Project since it is in its 5th and final term, before their annual meeting in July of this year in Hawaii.

The Palau Math Mentor Project team consists of PCC Math Instructor, Epimachus Moses and the recently retired Baskacio Oiterong, M.O.E. Math Specialist Hadleen Madelarak, and Koror Elementary School Teacher, Dilmai Saiske. The team services the public schools by helping the new math teachers and conducting class observations, consultations, and summer teacher workshops.

Belau Modekngei School was selected by PAL officers as the most suitable library to receive the donation, and librarian Lea Lagustan-Payawal was happy to accept. She says the encyclopedia set will be a welcome addition to the library's existing reference collection. Palau Association of Libraries was happy to work with the College library on this project.

The encyclopedia will be most useful for younger high school students, but also contains a great deal of information suitable for senior students as well.

Palau Community College library recently passed on a copy of Compton's twenty-six volume encyclopedia to Palau Association of Libraries (PAL). The College library had a more recent set available on their shelves, so they removed this earlier edition of the encyclopedia. Rather than discard a resource which is still useful for student research, Librarian Debra Neas offered the set to PAL to distribute to one of Palau's school libraries.

PISBDCN Director Pleased with Palau SBDC

Palau Small Business Development Center Director, Lisa Abraham

The Palau Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is doing quite well according to the Pacific Islands Small Business Development Center Network (PISBDCN) Director, Casey Jeszenka who conducted an on-site programmatic of the Palau SBDC with Associate Director, Georgette Flores Reyes at the end of March.

PISBDCN Director and Associate Director reviewed everything from client files, training files, program income, conflict of interest statements, furniture and equipment inventory list, and reimbursement reports, to memorandum of understandings. The overall review revealed that Palau SBDC met all the standards with only two minor deficiencies in regards to client files and program income. Nevertheless, Palau SBDC is performing quite well.

"Every year PISBDCN Director and Associate Director conducts a random review of the Center and this is the first time that we met all the standards and for that, we are very happy. We are grateful for PCC for housing the center and for their contribution; indeed they have contributed to our success", says Palau SBDC Director, Lisa Abraham.

SSS-Project Beacon Prime Students for Final Exams
By Shelley deBlair Remengesau

Even with all the hustling that has been going on around the campus, SSS-Project Beacon held its doors open to its participants and any student of the college for the usual Study Marathon. During the two-day event, May 10th and 11th, a good 121 students crowded the place as they reviewed for their final exams while treated to great snacks and drinks, thanks to Student Services.

Peer tutors reviewing for the final exams with their fellow classmates.

The peer instructors/tutors managed to assist with the reviewing of the students. The staff of SSS-Project Beacon would like to encourage the program participants and all students of the college to do well on all of their final exams. Sixty-Three Students Complete Art Class

Dean Willy Wally (far right) with Koror State Government Youth & Cultural Affairs Director, Scott Yano, and Art Teacher, Alegria Richardson and art students pose near the spectacular display of the students' artwork at Koror State Government.

Sixty-three (63) students ranging from 5th to 8th graders from all the elementary schools in Koror received their certificates last week Friday for participating in the Art Class on Water Color sponsored by the Koror State Government Youth and Cultural Affairs in collaboration with PCC-Continuing Education (CE) office.

The art class, taught by Alegria Richardson, was divided into two sessions from March 3rd to 24th and April

7th to 28th, every Saturdays for four hours each session.

The students' beautiful artworks were displayed at the ceremony where President Tellei and Cultural Affairs Chief Lazarus Ulengchong awarded the students' certificates of completion.

Senator Joshua Koshiba, PCC Dean of Continuing Education, Willy Wally, and Koror State Governor, Yoshitaka Adachi gave special remarks as well. Parents were also there to witness this special ceremony and see the work of their extremely talented kids.

Dean Wally would like to take this opportunity and thank Koror State Government for funding the program and for arranging a very well organized, memorable ceremony for the students. We look forward to many more programs from Koror State Government! Dean Wally also thanks the students for their participation as well as their parents for their support. Also, special thanks to Alegria Richardson for sharing her expertise with the elementary students.
