44th PCC Commencement Exercise in Two Weeks! |
PCC Students Present Field Studies & Awarded Grants at Symposium
Two aspiring Environmental/Marine Science (EMS) students, Carmin Pipit and Victor Nestor gave their field study presentations last week during the 2nd Environmental/Marine Science Students' Symposium at Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC). Carmin Pipit made a presentation on the Impact of MPA on Holothurians: Ngimes and Cheremrum. For her field study, Pipit chose MPA (Marine Protected Area) sites, Ngelukes and Ucher in Ngchesar State. Pipit discovered that there was a gradual increase of sea cucumbers in stations 3 and 4 in both Ngelukes and Ucher instead of Stations 1 and 2 due to the fact that they are both farthest from shore and are not immediately affected by sediments flowing into the ocean. The Palau Community College will be hosting the 44th Commencement Exercise this coming May 25th, 2007 at 10:00am at PCC Cafeteria. This year's graduates will not only include PCC students, but also graduates of the Substance Abuse and Addiction Counseling under the collaboration of the Ministry of Health and PCC as well a Adult High School Class of 2007. According to Director Deikola Olikong, Chair of the Graduation Committee for the 44th Commencement Exercise, the committee members have been well assigned with their tasks and are prepared and confidant that this year's |
graduation will be as successful and memorable. There are a total of ninety-four (94) students who are expected to graduate this year, but only seventy-two (72) will be able to attend the graduation: forty-eight (48) are PCC students; eighteen (18) are Adult High School students; six (6) are the Substance Abuse and Addiction Counseling students. For further information about the 44th PCC Commencement Exercise, please contact Chair Deikola Olikong at 488-3036 or Secretary Lesley Adachi at 488-2470/2471 ext. 257. |

(Continued from page 1) Pipit concluded by stating that Ngelukes MPA is protecting ngimes and cheremrum populations. She recommends that additional studies of ngimes is needed in other MPAs to better understand their biology; establish preventive measures on land to prevent sedimentation into ocean; and utilize other marine management methods in addition to MPAs because MPAs alone are not enough.
Victor Nestor, another aspiring Scientist, made his presentation on the Comparison of Fish Abundance and |
Size Inside and Outside Cemetery Reef MPA. His data collection indicated that in all the fish inside cemetery reef and outside cemetery reef (controlled site), reked and mellemau were the most common. Reked, however, is twice as big as in the cemetery as compared to the ones in the controlled site while mellemau was only a mere two inches smaller in the cemetery than in the controlled site. But because the difference was so small, mellemau's size was insignificant data. Furthermore, Nestor commented that fish are more abundant in the cemetery than in the controlled site. Nestor concluded his presentation by validating that establishing MPA as a management tool is a success and that there are more fish and bigger fish at an MPA than outside at a controlled site. He recommended that improvement in law enforcement in protected areas is needed and that this should include monitoring programs. After presenting their field studies, Pipit and Nestor were awarded the National Science Foundation Advanced Technological Education Program (NSF-ATE) grants amounting to $480 each. PCC was awarded this grant for three years and this is the second year of the grant. This is a regional grant with a |
specific goal of attracting future generations of under-represented minorities into the science and technology fields. Grant activities include support for student research projects for each institution to fill data gaps identified by the local resource management agencies. This element is designed to strengthen relationships between the community colleges and the communities they serve, specifically in the technical disciplines, and support promising students to gain additional research experience in experimental design, data collection, data analysis and dissemination. Pipit and Nestor thanks PCC Instructors, PICRC Researchers and Assistants, and their family for their tremendous support. Congratulations Carmin and Victor, job well done! |

Marshall Islands' Organization Celebrate 28th Constitution Day |
||
|
On May 1st, the Republic of the Marshall Islands celebrated its 28th Constitution Day. However, because May 1st was a school day, the Marshall Island Organization on campus, head by leader Samuel Bikajela, observed and celebrated their National Day this past weekend. The students enjoyed barbecuing and eating the delicious cake that had the Marshallese flag drawn on it. Afterwards, Bikajela organized |
numerous of fun games for everyone to enjoy. They first kicked off with the spinning game, volleyball, and then tug-of-war and some other games that kept them laughing until sunset. Special thanks to Koror State
Government, President Tellei, VP Jay Olegeriil, Dean Marensia Edward,
Director Deikola Olikong, Ismael Anastacio, and Ephraim Ngirachitei

Dry Litter Waste Management Pilot Project Gets Underway in Ngerikiil |
|
|
A construction work for a Dry Litter Waste Management System pilot project started on April 16, 2007 at John Oiph's farm. This Dry Litter System is a collaborative Water Quality project between Palau Community College- Cooperative Research & Extension and Northern Marianas College-Cooperative Research, Extension and Education Services (PCC-CRE and NMC-CREES). The collaborative project was introduced to Palau Community
College-Cooperative Research & Extension early last
year 2006. Workshop and farm survey were conducted prior to the selection of
a potential farmer for the pilot project. John Oiph's farm was selected for the
pilot project from the majority of participants of various government agencies
who attended the workshop. It was selected for these reasons: 1. Located
near Ngerikiil water source 2. Located along the road (great location for
demonstration) 3. Small-scale swine operation 4.
John is interested and full time farmer. |
The Dry Litter System that is being constructed will be a demonstration for all the farmers and anybody who is interested in adopting the model for their farms. What is so special about this dry litter system is that it protects the water and land from contamination and it conserves water and produce lots of compost to farmers. For more information about the dry litter waste management, please contact VP Thomas Taro at 488-2746.

Sureor, Caleb Go Deep; Mesekiu Takes 1 0 Lead in Playoff Series |
|
|
On Thursday, May 3rd, the Palau Community College baseball team took a 1 game advantage of the best-of-five series by defeating Ngerbeched 5 to 3. As expected, ace pitcher Sureor Ngirailemesang pitched for PCC, pitching 9 complete innings, allowing seven hits, and four base-on-balls and striking out seven. In the bottom of the second inning, Sureor sent a 0-0 pitch deep over the right field fence for a solo homer, helping his own cause by giving PCC an early lead. PCC took a two run lead in the second on a double by Melengis Uchel who scored on Cleofas Iyar's sacrifice fly. Moments later, Ngirailemesang connected on his solo homer to give PCC a 2 0 early advantage. In the fourth, PCC increased the lead to 4 0 on a single by Uchel and a two-run homer by Caleb Meltel. |
In the bottom of the fifth, Jason Monkeya singled, stole scoring base, and scored on a single by Del E. Mad. PCC's lead was never challenged as Ngerbeched remained scoreless until the closing inning. The only threat came in the ninth and final inning when Ngerbeched leadoff hitter singled to reach base and Turu Tellei reached base on a error. Kalei Luii single to drive in Saridel and put Tellei on third base. The threat proved too little too late as the next batter flied out, followed by a strike out and PCC shortstop Mad robbed Eric Kyota of a hit by grabbing a hard-hit grounder deep behind the third base and threw Luii out at second base to end the game. Sureor Ngirailemesang was the winning pitcher, while Fave Ngiramengior was charged with the loss. |

Slugfest at Asahi Field: PCC 26, Ngerbeched 4 |
||
|
Led offensively by Sureor Ngirailemesang, Caleb Meltel and Dekei Ngiramengior, and defensively by Ty Saiske, the pennant winner PCC Mesekiu overwhelmed Ngerbeched on Monday, May 7th, in what may well be termed as majors' hitting clinic. The win gives PCC a 2 0 advantage in the best-of-five series. None of the five Ngerbeched pitchers was able to tame the aggressive bats of PCC batters as they collected a record-setting 31 hits, including five home runs, one triple and seven doubles. Leading the offensive attack was Ngirailemesang who went 3-for-7 with two homers, including a grand slam and driving in 6 runs. Also contributing was Meltel who also had a pair of homers and 3 RBIs; Ngiramengior 4-for-7 with a homer, a double and two singles and 3 RBIs; |
Dell E. Mad 5-for-7 with two doubles; Melengis Uchel 3-for-7 with a double; Omsuul Yalap- 3-for-6 with a double, Cleofas Iyar 4-for-7 with a double; Saiske 3-for-6 with a triple; and Spis Gordon with a single. PCC's offensive performance of 31 hits with 13 extra-baggers, including 5 homers in the playoffs is a feat that has not occurred in the Palau Major League and is unlikely to be repeated. Teamwise, PCC's offense batted an astounding 31-for-61. On the mound for PCC was ace pitcher Ty Saiske who pitched a complete nine-inning game and struck out five and allowed only one run, a solo homer by veteran and PCC Alumni Clint Mersai. Drake Yosiwo, Fave Ngiramengior, Rivery Delutaoch, Brent Melairei, and Billy Umang pitched for Ngerbeched. |
