Vocational/Technical Awareness Week Next Tuesday

The PCC Vocational/Technical Education Awareness Week is set to kick off next week Tuesday, March 11, 2008. PCC students and their instructors are prepared and ready with their individual class projects and demonstrations which will be showcased during the three-day event to be held on campus from March 11-13, 2008.

According to Associate Dean Sherman Daniel who heads the organizing committee for the awareness week, over a thousand (1000) students from both public and private high school students are expected to visit and tour the campus throughout the three days. He said that in addition to the student visitors, community members and groups are also invited. "The awareness week is open to the general public.

Voc. Ed. Chair

We wanted to make sure that we invite all elementary and high school students including those from the community, and this is a grand opportunity for us to show what the College has to offer," said Daniel.

There will be a total of 14 display booths and exhibit stations featuring PCC students conducting presentations and

demonstrations specific to their fields of studies. A number of PCC students and staff have also been assigned as tour guides to help facilitate tour groups as they make their way around campus. On the final day of the event, various student crafted-items such as dressers, bookshelves, coffee tables, and other items will be available at reduced prices.

The PCC Vocational/Technical Education Awareness Week promotes and advocates awareness of College programs and services to the community, most especially to high school students who are prospective students of Palau Community College.

Mid-Term exams for this Spring Semester 2008 were scheduled from March 3 7, 2008. To provide support for the students, the usual Mid-Term Study Marathons were held on Friday, February 29 & Monday, March 3rd. The Mid-Term Study Marathons are conducted to provide students a venue for studying, which includes resource personnel assisting them with tutoring, organizing study materials and reviews. A total number of fifty-three (53) students participated in the study marathon on Friday, Feb. 29, while sixty (60) students participated on Monday, March 3rd.

It was a hectic but rewarding two days as traffic of students flowed in and out and kept tutors hopping around making sure students received

needed assistance. Student participants received assistance, reviewed and/or completed papers & assignments for various classes that included: Math, English, Science, Communication, History, Computer Science, Business, Information Technology, Social Science, Electronic Technology, Nursing, Tourism, Blue Print, Office Administration, and Music. Snacks and refreshments were provided to sustain the students while they studied, or completed papers and assignments.

Hopefully the study marathons prepared students for their mid-terms exams, and motivated them to complete papers and assignments that were due mid-term week. The next study marathons are scheduled for the final exam period at the end of Spring Semester 2008.

PCC Mesekiu Outstrips Kayangel Angels

Resorting to baseball fundamentals, PCC Mesekiu scored 4 runs in the final inning to defeat Kayangel Angels 5 to 1 on Monday night. The win completes a perfect second round and improves PCC's record to league-leading 11 wins versus 1 loss.

PCC scored first in the top of the third inning when starting pitcher Merei Ise reached base on base-on-balls and advanced on a single by Dexter Sadang and scored on an RBI single by Ty Saiske to take an early 1 0 lead. A similar fashion by Kayangel tied the score in the sixth inning. The deadlock continued until the top of the ninth inning when visitor PCC put the game out of reach.

PCC's lead-off batter Ty singled to reach firstbase. Another single by Etitel Mad moved Ty, a potential go-ahead run to scoring base. Kalei Luii grounded out and moved both runners to scoring positions. Betting on a double-play, Kayangel intentionally walked Dekei Ngiramengior to load the bases. Faced with a must-score situation, PCC resorted to fundamentals of baseball and surprised Kayangel's defense when clean-up hitter Kaleb Meltel delivered a perfectly ex-ecuted bunt toward an unsuspecting third baseman allowing Ty to cross the plate and Kaleb to reach first. With one run lead and bases still loaded, another perfectly placed bunt

from Cleofas Iyar scored Etitel to increase the lead to 3 1. PCC's scoring assault continued as Dekei scored on a sacrifice bunt from Merei and Kaleb scored on a single by Dexter to increase the lead to 5 1.

In the bottom of the ninth, Kayangel Angels faced a challenging task of erasing the 4-run deficit with ace pitcher Ty on the mound. Down but not out, Kayangel mounted a comeback as Sadang Osarch singled, followed by a single by Poch Osima. Then, Kiukl Ridpath grounded to shortstop for an easy forced-out at second while Sadang scored to cut the deficit to 2 - 5. With one out and runners on first and third, Jordan Malsol, representing a potential tying run stepped into the batter's box. On a count of 1 ball 1 strike, Jordan connected on a fastball from Ty, but the liner was caught by third baseman Dekei who quickly stepped on the base, entrapping Poch between third and home for the game ending in a double play.

Meanwhile, the third round of the season began yesterday with PCC facing Airai Aces. In head-to-head competition between the two teams, PCC holds a 2-0 lead, defeating the Aces 6- 2 in the first round, and 8 6 in the second round. Mesekiu's coaching staff attributes the win to the players' ability to execute fundamental plays that are part of the team's practices.
