Vocational/ Technical Education Awareness in Less Than 10 Days

Vocational/ Technical Education Awareness Week Organizing Committee members plan out the tour route for the over 700 students expected to visit the campus for the awareness week.

Preparation for this year's commemoration of the PCC Vocational/ Technical Education Awareness Week is well into its final stages with less than 10 days left

before the event kicks off on Monday, March 12, 2007. PCC students and their instructors are diligently working on their individual class projects and demonstrations which will be showcased during the three-day occasion to be held from March 12-14, 2007.

According to Associate Dean Sherman Daniel who heads the organizing effort for the awareness week, a minimum of seven hundred (700) students from both public and private high school students are expected to visit and tour the campus throughout the three days. He also said this year a special invitation will be extended to MOC/ PCC retirees, saying that the retirees have

sacrificed much for the College and it is only proper that they be included in this notable College occasion. He further noted that the community members and groups who are avid supporters of the college will also be invited. "Even though the awareness week is open to the general public, we wanted to make sure that we invite those who regularly lend support to the College, and this is a grand opportunity for us to show our supporters what they have helped us accomplish," said Daniel.

This year, there will be a total of 16 display booths and exhibit stations

Chaired by VP Thomas Taro, met to this week to discuss the possibilities of either adopting or creating a lab school and which target group or potential clients it will focus on. The task force members who were present include VP Taro, Special Assistant Todd Ngiramengior; Dean Alvina Timarong; Associate Dean Sherman Daniel; Director Laura Mangham; and

Instructors Natalia Rekemesik and Wilma Sukrad. The purpose of creating a lab school would be to help improve and enhance curriculum development. It also provides the opportunity for pre-service and in-service teachers to research, experiment, observe, and modify teaching methods and curriculum to be more suitable and effective for our kids.

After much deliberation, they decided on creating a new lab school starting from Day Care and gradually expand to higher grades in the near future.

The task force is meeting next week on the 7th before they submit their first progress report to the President towards the end of the month.

Uchel's 3 Homers Lift PCC Over Airai

Melengis Uchel, one of the MVPs of the game

On Saturday, February 26, 2007, PCC Mesekiu baseball team defeated Airai Aces for the second time this season to remain atop the Palau Major League standing. The highly anticipated match up was quickly over when PCC took a 3 to 1 lead at the top of the first inning, enroute to an 11 to 2 win.

PCC scored three in the first when leadoff batter Bedor Kyota singled to reach base. Omsuul Yalap reached base on an error by Airai shortstop and Dekei Ngiramengior singled to drive in Yalap. Cleanup hitter Caleb Meltel singled to move Ngiramengior to third but was tagged out at second

attempting to stretch his single into a double. PCC's final run of the inning came on a solo homer by Melengis Uchel who went on to hit two more homeruns and drive in 7 runs.

With the lead, PCC ace pitcher Sureor Ngirailemesang went to work, striking out 10 Airai batters and keeping them scoreless until the eighth inning while allowing only four hits. Airai's only other run came in the eighth inning on singles by Allen Tesei and Temmy Ngirblekuu. PCC scored one in the fourth on a single by Cleofas Iyar and Ngirailemesang helped his own cause by driving in Iyar with a single. PCC scored anew in the fifth when Ngiramengior singled and Uchel hit his second homerun of the game. In the sixth, PCC scored again on singles by Kyota and Yalap and Uchel hit his third homerun, a feat that has not been done at Asahi Field in recent history. PCC's final score came in the eighth on a single by Kyota and a double by Yalap who collected two singles

and a double for the game.

Uchel's three homers puts him in the homerun lead followed by teammates Dekei Ngiramengior with two and Omsuul Yalap, Caleb Meltel and Sureor Ngirailemesang with one each. PCC has a total of 8 homeruns while the rest of the teams have a combined total of 6 homeruns.

Because it has been realized that these areas are needed, the region's College/ University Presidents, through the Islands of Opportunity Alliance, are in full force to create this program in their home countries. They applied for a grant and was awarded the National Science Foundation's Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Program for all Colleges/ Universities of the region. Therefore, the President is determined to implement the STEM program at PCC by Fall 2007.

This program is meant to support and increase the number of minority students entering scientific, technological, engineering, and mathematical professions. Being a two-year college, PCC, through this program, intends to groom interested students with the necessary requirements to further their education in a 4-year institution after PCC. In other words, this program is designed for students to attain only the basic of STEM, must complete their education in one of the four fields abroad.

During the meeting, the task force looked at the possibility of perhaps articulating STEM courses into high schools so as to make it

easier for prospective PCC students to transit and immediately enterinto their field of choice. In addition, teachers/ counselors could easily identify interested students so that they can better prepare them through this program. Articulating with other colleges/ universities was also taken into consideration.

Also on the meeting's agenda was electing officers and creating committees. As a result, Dean Timarong and Director Tadao will both Chair the task force and Marianne Temaungil and Karen Miovas will both be secretaries of the task force. The task force was also divided into three committees:

Science Committee Members
Vernice Yuji
Eric Tomlinson

Language Committee Members
Marianne Temaungil
Karen Miovas

Math & Technology Members
Margeline Buban
Epimachus Moses
Johvanna Yaoch

The task force's next meeting is set for March 20th.

Interested applicants can either get an application from the Palau National Scholarship Board Office located near Palau High School or download the application from the Australian Embassy's website at www.fsm.embassy.gov.au (click onto the "Development Cooperation" button located on the left side of the home page).
