College to Celebrate
15th Charter Day Next Friday

Students Tour USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62)

Last week Friday, over 30 PCC students visited the USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62), a ship with defense capabilities in anti-air warfare (AAW), anti-submarine warfare (ASW), and anti-surface warfare (ASUW). USS Fitzgerald also provides local area protection to battle groups, surface action groups, and other ships. Guided by Lt. Peter King, the Operations Officer, the students were excited to see the various sophisticated weaponry systems on board, examining every corner and learning how and when the weapons are used. They also visited the combat room, the central control station, and other rooms aboard the vessel. The USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) arrived on island last Thursday for some R & R and left Monday.

"To celebrate this year's 15th Charter Day, the annual President's Run & Walk and a special gathering is already set for Friday, April 4th. The celebration will kick off with the annual President's Run & Walk in the morning and then a celebration at the PCC Courtyard", said Director Tchuzie Tadao who heads the Charter Day committee.

The general public is invited to help us commemorate PCC's 15th birthday by joining the Annual President's Run & Walk. The President's Run & Walk will start from the Koror side of the Japan-Palau Friendship Bridge and finish at the Palau National Track & Field. Transportation to the starting line will be available at the PCC parking lot

from 4:00 a.m. to 5:15 a.m. The Run & Walk will then start promptly at 5:30 a.m. The first 100 runners & 100 walkers to complete the course will receive a commemorative t-shirt. Light continental breakfast will also be served to all the participants.

After the President's Run & Walk, the celebration will move to the PCC Courtyard where the College Board of Trustees, Administration, and students mark the 15th Charter Day of the College with special presentations and entertainment all sponsored by the Associated Students of Palau Community College (ASPCC). Traditional and contemporary dance performances by students from the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), Republic of Palau, and the Republic of the Marshall Islands will be part of the activities.

There will be no classes and all offices will be closed on April 4th as students and staff will be taking part in the day's festivities.

For more information about the 15th PCC Charter Day celebration, please contact Chairman Tadao at 488-3965 or Co-Chair Ephraim Ngirachitei at 488- 3074.

Instructor Inspires Students with Life-story

PCC students listen attentively as guest speaker Keiden Skilang (l) tells his inspirational life-story.

"A family member used to tell me, Keiden, knowing you, you are not going to succeed," told Business instructor Keiden Skilang who was the guest speaker for this month's "Tuesday Night" Program at the Cafeteria. "I drank alcohol, fought, hung out with the wrong group of people, skipped classes, and eventually dropped out of high school and later became a fisherman for 7 years", he said. Skilang told the students about the time he got badly injured from a fight and had to be hospitalized in Intensive Care Unit (ICU). It was then that he realized what he had been doing to himself and regretted not listening to his grandparents. He then decided he wanted to change for the better.

The first step he took was challenging himself by taking the GED examination, which he passed with flying colors. He then succeeded in attaining three certificates in Small Engine & Outboard Marine Technology, General Office Clerk,

and Tourism & Hospitality within a 3-year period at the College. After that, he went on to receive his Bachelor's in Business Administration with concentration in International Business and a Masters in Public Administration from the University of Guam. While studying in Guam, Skilang was a recipient of numerous scholarships, including a U.S. Navy Scholarship, and was on the Dean's and President's List numerous times.

In his presentation, Skilang also revealed and shared his formula in succeeding in College which was: A little bit of intellect + a dash of right decisions + a whole lot of effort and motivation. He also encouraged them by saying, "Anywhere in the world, if you have effort and motivation, you'll survive! If you have those, it'll take a whole lot of effort to fail".

After receiving his education, Skilang could have worked elsewhere but decided to come back home so that he can share his experience to students and help them lead better lives.

The students thank instructor Skilang for sharing his incredible life-story and secrets to success and inspiring them to give more effort and motivation in anything they set their minds to.

Taking Notes in Class
Taken from Study Tips.com at www.how-to-study.com

In classes, your teachers will talk about topics that you are studying. The information they provide will be important for you to know when you take tests. You must be able to take good written notes from what your teachers say.

Taking good notes is a three-stage process in which there are certain things you should do before class, during class, and after class. Here are the three stages of note-taking and what you should do during each stage.

1. Get Ready to Take Notes (Before Class).

* Review your notes from the previous class session before you come to class. This will help you remember what was covered and get you ready to understand new information your teacher provides.
* Complete all assigned readings before you come to class. Your teacher will expect that you have done this and will use and build upon this information.
* Bring all note-taking materials with you to class. Have several pens and pencils as well as your notebook.

2. Take Notes (During Class).

* Keep your attention focused on what your teacher is saying. Listen for "signal statements" that tell you that what your teacher is about to say is important to

write in your notes. Examples of signal statements are "The most important point…" and "Remember that . . . " Be sure to include in your notes information that your teacher repeats or writes on the chalkboard.
* Write quickly so that you can include all the important information in your notes. Do this by writing abbreviated words such as med for medicine, using symbols such as % for percent, and writing short sentences.
* Place a ? next to information you write in your notes, but about whose meaning you are not sure.

3. Rewrite Your Notes (After Class).

* Rewrite your notes to make them more complete by changing abbreviated words into whole words, symbols into words, and shortened sentences into longer sentences.
* Make your notes more accurate by answering any questions you had when writing your notes in class. Use your textbook and reference sources to obtain the information you need to answer your questions. If necessary, ask your teacher or other students for help.
* Check with other students to be sure you did not leave out important information.

Having good class notes will help you to be better prepared for tests.

PCC FSMSO to Celebrate FSM Cultural Day This Saturday
By: Rose Aliven-Kohama

The PCC FSMSO is holding a day of fun at the Palau National Track and Field on Saturday, March 29, 2008 beginning at 7:45am. In observance of their FSM Cultural Day holiday, the students will be playing several island games such as basket weaving, coconut husking as well as other exciting and fun events. Teams of six colors are already in full motion with the team captains boosting their team's spirit and colorful banners shouting out

their team names the Green Machines, Gray Jet Fighters, Yellow Warriors, White Angels, Blue "I Sorry", and the RedDevils. Thanks to Mr. Joeson Andon, a suitable name was spontaneously created for the event Micronesia All-Around Day of Fun. With an invitation extended to and accepted by the dormitory RMI and Palauan residence as well as the ASPCC officers, the FSMSO activity will definitely be an enjoyable and memorable one.
