15th Charter Day Celebration Set for April 4th

Tchuzie Tadao, Charter Day Committee Chair

The Charter Day Committee, headed by Director Tchuzie Tadao, has confirmed that the 15th Charter Day celebration will be held on Friday, April 4th. "We have already prepared activities to make this year's 15th

Charter Day celebration as enjoyable as last year's. All sub-committees have been given tasks to ensure that the activities will be carried out successfully", said Tadao. Even though April 4th is not an official holiday for the College and that there will be no classes, all PCC staff and students are encouraged to participate in the celebration. The general public is also invited to help us commemorate PCC's 15th birthday by participating in the Annual President's Run & Walk.

The celebration will kick off by having the Annual President's Run & Walk on Friday, April 4th. The Run & Walk will

start from the Koror side of the Japan-Palau Friendship Bridge and finish at the Palau National Track & Field. Transportation to the starting line will be available at the PCC parking lot from 4:00 a.m. to 5:15 a.m. The Run & Walk will then start promptly at 5:30 a.m. The first 100 runners & 100 walkers to complete the course will receive a commemorative t-shirt. Light continental breakfast will also be served to all the participants.

Library Recipient of JLPP Donation

The Palau Community College (PCC) Library is once again the recipient of six works of Japanese fiction, in English translation, under the donation program of the Japanese Literature Publishing Project (JLPP). The JLPP was launched in 2002 by the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan in an effort to introduce and promote translations of modern Japanese literature worldwide. PCC Library first received a donation of six works of Japanese fiction from JLPP in August 2007. Due to positive responses from the library and its patrons, JLPP once again donated books this year. Such donations are made possible through the Japanese Literature Publishing and Promotion Center (J-Lit Center), which is responsible for the management and realization of the Project on behalf of the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan. Since its inception, the Project has donated numerous publications to over 2000 public libraries, university libraries, and cultural institutions around the world.

The following are the books donated: Hell by Tsutsui, Yasutaka; School of Freedom by Shishi, Bunroku; Woman of the Other Shore by Mitsuyo Kakuta; Mistress Oriku: Stories from a Tokyo Teahouse by Matsutaro Kawaguchi; The Curious Casebook of Inspector Hanshichi; Detective Stories of Old Edo by Kido Okamoto; and The Hundred-Yen Singer by Naomi Suenaga.

These books will benefit the students of PCC as well as the community as a whole to further elevate the understanding of Japanese culture and people. Donations of this kind serve as another symbol of the maturing mutual friendship between Japan and the Republic of Palau.

       FSA Holds Retreat in Ngemelis

                    By: Wilma Sukrad, FSA President

The Faculty Senate Association (FSA) of Palau Community College held its first retreat at Ngemelis on Thursday, March 13, 2008. Over 80% of the association's members participated in this special event which provided the faculty with a much welcomed blend of professional development activities and R&R. Faculty Senate Association's president, Ms. Wilma Sukrad, facilitated two professional development sessions, one of which was a teambuilding activity that was intended to develop better relations between the faculty members. Following the teambuilding activity was a self-reflection exercise that was designed to enhance self-awareness so that each instructor can relate better to students and others with whom he/she interacts.

The professional development segment of the retreat was concluded with a presentation on stress management by Ms. Susan Bells, and an introductory exercise on meditation techniques. After lunch, everyone indulged in various fun activities.

The Faculty Senate Association wishes to express its gratitude to Palau Community College President, Dr. Patrick U. Tellei, Ms. Susan Bells, Shimbros International Incorporated and its general manager, Ms. Jennifer Koskelin, and Koror State Government whose support helped make this retreat a worthwhile experience for the faculty who are enlightened, rejuvenated, and very much ready to wrap up the academic year with lots of enthusiasm and motivation.

CORRECTION

Our apologies...

In last week's issue of Mesekiu's News in the Alumni Notes section, it was mistakenly printed that Pauline Jerry, an alumni working as a Secretary at the PCC Student Support Services-Project Beacon office, has been working at the College for the past 10 months. She has actually been working at the College for the past 3 years. Our apologies to Pauline and our readers for our error.

Good Listening In Class
Taken from Study Tips.com at www.how-to-study.com

It is important for you to be a good listener in class. Much of what you will have to learn will be presented verbally by your teachers. Just hearing what your teachers say is not the same as listening to what they say. Listening is a cognitive act that requires you to pay attention and think about and mentally process what you hear.

Here are some things you should do to be a good listener in class:

Be Cognitively Ready to Listen When You Come to Class. Make sure you complete all assigned work and readings. Review your notes from previous class sessions. Think about what you know about the topic that will be covered in class that day.
Be Emotionally Ready to Listen When You Come to Class. Your attitude is important. Make a conscious choice to find the topic useful and interesting. Be committed to learning all that you can.
Listen with a Purpose. Identify what you expect and hope to learn from the class session. Listen for these things as your teacher talks.
Listen with an Open Mind. Be receptive to what your teacher says. It is good to question what is said as long as

you remain open to points of view other than your own.
Be Attentive. Focus on what your teacher is saying. Try not to daydream and let your mind wander to other things. It helps to sit in the front and center of the class, and to maintain eye contact with your teacher.
Be an Active Listener. You can think faster than your teacher can speak. Use this to your advantage by evaluating what is being said and trying to anticipate what will be said next. Take good written notes about what your teacher says. While you can think faster than your teacher can speak, you cannot write faster than your teacher can speak. Taking notes requires you to make decisions about what to write, and you have to be an active listener to do this.
Meet the Challenge. Don't give up and stop listening when you find the information being presented difficult to understand. Listen even more carefully at these times and work hard to understand what is being said. Don't be reluctant to ask questions.
Triumph Over the Environment. The classroom may too noisy, too hot, too cold, too bright, or too dark. Don't give in to these inconveniences. Stay focused on the big picture - LEARNING.

pitcher Ty Saiske in the fourth who answered his team's calling by striking out two in the bottom of the fourth and kept the opponents scoreless in three innings. In the top of the fifth, PCC evened the score by scoring two as Sureor Ngirailemesang singled and stole second base. Cleofas Iyar singled to drive in Sureor and scored on an RBI single by Etitel Mad. PCC took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth when Dekei Ngiramengior singled to reach base, advanced to third base on a single by Kalei Luii and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cleofas Iyar. The Pirates mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh when Saichang singled and stole second and Bahid connected on an RBI double to score Saichang and even the score at 3 3. An untimely rain ended the game stranding the potential Ngardmau winning run at second base. PCC was declared the winner in accordance with baseball rules which states: If a regulation game (five innings complete) is called during an incomplete inning, the game ends at the end of the last complete inning. In this case, the last complete inning is sixth inning with PCC leading 3-2. Ty Saiske earned the win and Calson Dulei was charged with a loss.
