Vocational/ Technical Education Awareness Week a Huge Success!

After much preparation, the annually-held PCC Vocational/ Technical Education Awareness Week was a huge success!

Over 1,000 students all over Palau toured the campus. Elementary students from all the 16 states and high school students from Palau High School and Belau Modekngei toured the campus within the three days, March 12-14. The students were able to meet PCC students, tour the many facilities on campus, and witness the various programs available at PCC. Invited guests, community organizations, and other avid supporters of the College also took this opportunity and visited the campus.

The Vocational/ Technical Education Awareness Week would not have been as successful without the cooperation and dedication of the PCC Administration, Faculty, Staff, and Students. Also special thanks to PHS practicum students who took part in the Vocational/ Technical Education Awareness Week showcasing their projects with PCC students in their respective programs. Thank you all for your hard work! To all our visitors, it was a pleasure having you on campus and we look forward to seeing you all next year!

Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this most difficult time of sorrow and grief.

Mesekiu Closeout Their Regular Season in a Convincing
Fashion: PCC 15; Ngardmau Pirates 3

Members of the 2007 Mesekiu Baseball team pose with their Coach, Norman Sato (far left) and Manager, Todd Ngiramengior (far right) at Asahi Baseball Field.

Although off to a slow start, failing to score in the first two innings, PCC Mesekiu managed to regroup and defeated Ngardmau Pirates via ten-run rule in the seventh inning, a feat PCC has done seven times in fourteen outings.

PCC got on the board in the third when Bedor Kyota reached base on an error and scored on an RBI single by Dekei Ngiramengior, who scored on Melengis Uchel's triple off the left- field fence. PCC scored one more in the fourth and two in the fifth. Their big inning was the seventh when they scored 8 runs,

highlighted by singles by Omsuul Yalap and Dekei Ngiramengior, and a towering two-run homer by the winning pitcher Sureor Ngirailemesang, his third of the season. In six complete innings, winning pitcher Ngirailemesang struck out 9 and allowed one hit while reliever Ty Saiske who earned a save struck out two.

The Mesekiu baseball team closed the regular season with 3 wins to remain on top of the PML standings. The wins gave PCC the first place standing, a spot they have maintained since the start of the season. Mesekiu holds a league-leading record of 13 wins and 1 loss, and assures them of a first place standing in the playoff and a claim of the 2007 Palau Major League pennant.

Work-Study Students' Success Stories- Part 2

PCC Air-Condition Training Concludes

A/C Trainees showing off their certificates with President Dr. Tellei after their awarding ceremony.

After two weeks of air-condition training that covered installation, service and maintenance, and troubleshooting techniques, 7 participants from Ngchesar, Ngarchelong, Ngardmau, and Koror State Governments and a participant from the national hospital completed the required courses and received their certificates on Wednesday.

Instructor Ramon Garcia is looking forward to train more state government employees in the field of air conditioning and refrigeration so, if you are interested, please contact Sherman Daniel or Don Hanser at the Operation Maintenance & Improvement Program (OMIP) office at 488-2470/ 2471 ext. 254.

(l-r): Tayeko Emesiochel and her Food Service Supervisor Tino Faatuuala pose for the camera at the Hospital's Library.

"Working here has made me want to become a dietician so I can help others know which food is healthy and which is not", says Tayeko Emesiochel, a PCC freshman majoring in Tourism & Hospitality- Hotel Operations (THHO).

Emesiochel works at the Food Service office at the Belau National Hospital. "I am happy to have her work for me", commented her Supervisor Tino Faatuuala. Emesiochel works directly with the hospital cooks to get recipes and translates them from Palauan to English.

By doing so, they can see whether or not the recipes are healthy for patients and change them accordingly. She also conducts patient food surveys and inventories, helps put together food progress reports, files, and now knows the methods of making up a menu. In fact, she is able to change the hospital menu based on supplies that are available at the hospital.

"I've learned from my supervisor to take work more seriously. I've also learned which food are bad for diabetics. I now know the different ways of healthy cooking and even how to budget my shopping ", says Emesiochel.

Emesiochel and her Supervisor Faatuuala thanks the College for the work-study program. However, their only suggestion for the program is to provide some public speaking training for the students to build up their confidence so that when they start working, they are more comfortable to talk to people.

Special Education Majors Learn ASL

ED 120 students sign the Palau national anthem with Instructor Jemmy Blelai during their presentation last week.

As a requirement for special education majors, the ED 120 class learned the American Sign Language (ASL) as shown in their presentation of the national anthem last week in PCC Urur building. After translating the Palauan national anthem into English, the students learned to sign the anthem using ASL. President Dr. Tellei, Dean Alvina Timarong, Director Deikola Olikong, other instructors and counselors, and CO 111 students who witnessed this presentation had the opportunity to have some fun and joined the ED 120 class sign the national anthem.

Instructor Jemmy Blelai taught Dario

CO 111 students having some fun signing the Palau national anthem with the ED 120 students.

Harris, Eileen Babauta, Pioria Faungy, Tiupida Tom, Brent Ueki, and Wililah Xavier about 600-800 signs, 700 of which are the basic, everyday signs. In the past, there have been only two Palauan interpreters, Instructor Jemmy Blelai and Theofina Michael. Now, we can count on these six students as interpreters, but hopefully, more locals would be interested and learn sign language. It's fun and knowing ASL can help others who are of need!

For more information about the special education program or ASL, please contact Instructor Jemmy Blelai at 488- 2470/ 2471 ext. 255.
