Hard Work and Perseverance Pays Off |

What does it mean to be hardworking and persistent? The College's Institutional Research Analyst and Assessment Consultant, Nino Pate is a great example of someone who has been consistently hardworking and persistent. Chosen among nearly 1,000 entrees, Pate's Masters Thesis "Technical Efficiency of Philippine Rice-Producing Regions: An Econometric Approach" and his advisor and co-author Dr. Augustina Tan-Cruz's thesis were the only two chosen to be presented at the 10th |
National Convention on Statistics under the Econometrics/ Statistical Modeling Category in October in Philippines. "When I first saw my name on the National Statistical Coordination Board website, I was very happy and proud. My dream came true! I graduated in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Statistics and since then, I've always wanted to attend the National Convention. Then in 2004, I was able to join the rest of the nation's statisticians in the 9th convention. The minute I heard one of the presenters, I instantly vowed that I would present my paper at the next convention. I have finally been recognized for my hard work! If it weren't for my postgraduate studies in econometrics, I wouldn't have been able to achieve a statistically significant research paper and get to where I am now", said Pate. The National Convention on Statistics (NCS), held every three years, is one |
of the major statistical events conducted by the Philippine Statistical System (PSS) and spearheaded by the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB). The highlights of the two-day Convention include the developments affecting the PSS; and to elicit the cooperation and support of statisticians and professionals in related fields from the government, academe, and private sector towards a more responsive statistical system. "After six years, my dream finally came true. It's a great fulfillment for me. Therefore, my challenge to all students is to try to aim high and hit the mark. With hard work and perseverance, you can fulfill your dreams. The road may not be perfect, but it's worth experiencing", says Pate. Congratulations Nino, from your family at PCC! |

Mesekiu Looses Championship But Bags Most Awards |

On Thursday, May 31st, PCC Mesekiu team lost the championship game to Airai by a score of 10 to 5, closing a very successful season. The 2007 PML pennant winners were unable to forget the seventh and final game. With the exception of a solo homer by Caleb Meltel and a two-run homer by Dekei Ngiramengior, PCC's offense never got on track as Airai ace pitcher Tkoel Iyechad allowed only seven hits in nine complete innings. Airai took an early lead in the first inning on a 2-run homer by Reagan Sidoi. PCC narrowed the lead to 2-1 in the second when PCC clean-up batter Caleb Meltel hit a solo homer over the right field fence. |
Airai scored again in the third on a single by Herman Alfonso and another single by Chris Daniel. PCC once again narrowed the lead to 3-2 in the sixth when Ngiramengior doubled to bring in Etitel Mad. Airai put the game out of reach in the sixth by scoring six runs on costly errors by PCC's defense and timely hits by Tekau Teriong, Sano Sakurai, and Daniel. Airai would score another run in the eighth inning to increase their lead to 10 to 2. PCC scored two runs in the eighth on a two-run homer by Ngiramengior and another in the ninth on a double by Ty Saiske and a single by Bedor Kyota for the final score of 10 to 5. Although PCC was unable to win the championship trophy, the team collected most awards, including the 2007 pennant trophy, runner-up, batting champion, homerun king, and rookie of the year. Melngis Uchel collected both the batting champion and the homerun king while Etitel Mad won the rookie of the year award. The next season looks promising for Mesekiu as most of this year's players plan to enroll this coming school year. |

BITS AND PIECES... I'M YOURS Crew Thanks Academic Affairs... The Koror Elementary School I'M YOURS Crew would like to express our gratitude to the Academic Affairs Office for letting us borrow the science lab skeleton for the production of our Anti-Smoking commercial during the Educational Awareness Week. We are proud to inform Academic Affairs office that our commercial won First Place, and we achieved this accomplishment with your help. Thank you, PCC and Dean Timarong, for your assistance! We are sending you a copy of our Award-winning commercial for your enjoyment, and hope you will take our message about the dangers of smoking to heart. Correction to Last Week's Story... In last week's issue of Mesekiu's News under the story of Takeo New SBA President, the last paragraph stated that Ms. Emrei Takeo will serve the current term until the next SBA election in September of this year. However, it should have stated that Ms. Emrei Takeo, as President-Elect, automatically becomes the SBA President for 2007-2008 according to the by laws of SBA. |
Junior Achievement Students Promote

Think back to your high school years...did you ever think that you could start your own company while still in high school? Well, now it's possible as with the case of four visiting students from Guam who were accompanied by Junior Achievement (JA) Company Program Chairman, Guam Board, Joe Rios who is also the Sales and Customer Service Manager for Matson Navigation Company and Maria I.D. Pangelinan who is the JA Executive Director and the HLATTE Marketing Specialist for the University of Guam. They were able to meet with Palau High School (PHS) students last week at one of the College's classrooms in Btaches building to promote their program. They have also extended their invitation to private high schools as well. PHS students were very eager and excited to learn about the program and hoped that JA Company Program be implemented in Palau so that they too can learn how to start their own companies. The four visiting students from various high schools in Guam have started their own companies with the help and |
guidance of the JA Company Program. These four remarkable students are: Jesse Quenga- President, BAM (Bright Achieving Minds), which won the Company of Year award; Darin Eay- President, SHARP (Students Helping to Achieve Real Profit), who won President of the Year award; Anthony Quenga- member, SHARP, who won Achiever of the Year award; and Tasha Tydingco- Vice President of Production, [tion] (Teen Initiative on eNtrepreneur), who won VP of the Year award. SHARP and [tion] products are T-Shirts but SHARP has their won logo on their T-Shirts, while BAM's products are bags. JA Company Program uses hands-on experiences to help young people understand the economics of life. In partnership with businesses and educators, JA brings the real world to students, opening their minds to their potential. JA programs encompasses business, economics, and entrepreneurship curriculum for students in grades 9 through 12. |
