Professor Barnes Launches ARP-499

Professor Steve Barnes of San Diego State University (SDSU) has been on campus the entire week to get the ARP-499 Education Research class underway for the twenty-six students enrolled in the SDSU 3-Dept. bachelor cohort program. Barnes who returns back to California tomorrow said that he has met with his class and is convinced that required ground work has been established for the students to fulfill their assigned research projects. "I have methodically arranged the class into six research groups and oriented them on the specific requirements of the course. And although, I will be teaching and monitoring their progress on-line, I am confident that my students will successfully carry out their projects," he said. Teaching both the bachelor and master's cohort programs, this is Barnes' fourth trip to Palau in the last four years. Like most SDSU professors dispatched to Palau to launch classes for the SDSU-PCC Online Cohort program, Barnes enjoys the friendliness and thoughtfulness of Palauans. "I have been fortunate that my career has brought me to various beautiful destinations in the Pacific, but it is definitely Palau I enjoy visiting most," he said. "And if I may borrow a celebrated quote from the blockbuster `Terminator' movie, `I'll be back'."

PAL to Hold Fundraising Carnival to Celebrate Library Week

The Palau Association of Libraries (PAL), which is comprised of Special Libraries & Archives, Palau Public Library, State Libraries and the Palau Community College Library, will hold a fundraising carnival tomorrow at the Long Island Park to commemorate Library Week. The consortium of libraries decided on the fundraising with a carnival flair as a fun and entertaining approach to promoting and encouraging public awareness of the importance of literacy.

According to PCC library staff involved in the preparatory work for the event, there will be a number of fun games, activities, and information booths all tailored to promote reading and literacy, especially to children and young adults. There will be books available for sale and food stalls will also sell food items. All proceed and donations will be used by PAL to support literacy efforts and

capacity building among libraries in Palau.

The public is invited to come out and enjoy a fun-filled day. Parents are especially encouraged to bring their children as there will be lots of educational activities for the kids. Activities will officially kick-off at 10:00 am.

For more information about the PAL fundraising carnival, please contact Pamela Bidwell at 488-2470/71, ext. 240.
