Educators Continue Pursuit of Degrees

By: PCC Work-Study Student Katosang Katosang, Upward Bound Work-Study Students,
Elway Ikeda and Glowy Demei, and WIA student worker Tatekoi Felix.

Palau's finest teachers, who spend most of the year educating young students in elementary schools across Babeldaob including schools in Peleliu, Angaur, and Kayangel make their way to Koror in the summer months to pursue the degrees now required of them by law. With their time divided between work and summer school, the pursuit of their degrees has been slow going. Individual teachers on campus this summer were interviewed in between classes and most had the same problem: not enough time. They say that summer courses unlike those offered during Fall and Spring semesters are too

short and too few for these teachers to progress quickly enough towards the attainment of their degrees. With the Ministry of Education now requiring them to complete their degrees by the Summer of 2008, these teachers are hard-pressed to reach their goals.

All of these teachers have been teaching in classrooms for a number of years ranging from two (2) years to fifteen (15) years. Those interviewed were seasoned teachers, some commute daily from Babeldaob, others relocate to Koror from the islands of Angaur, Beliliou, and Kayangel during the summer to live in Koror and attend classes. Even though they may seem older and not used to the life of an average college student, these teachers are applauded for their hard work in pursuing their degrees, which will ultimately benefit their students in their respective schools throughout Palau.

Over 100 Students Participate in CE Summer Programs

This summer, Continuing Education (CE) office is quite busy with not only its popular Summer Kids program that offers English, Math, and Palauan classes to elementary students, but also with high school students who are taking Koror State sponsored Palauan Cultural classes. CE is also offering basic Mandarin and Japanese classes to community members.

A total of seventy- four (74) elementary students, both from public and private schools, are taking the summer classes from morning to late afternoon, Monday to Friday. Koror Elementary School teachers: Miriam Anastacio, Julia Wally, and Mayleen Ngiriou are teaching the students in English, Math, and Palauan.

weaving, woodcarving, spear-making, and performing arts. The 4-week summer program is popular among students who want to sharpen or develop their skills in the essential cultural traditions. Ilek Iskawa, Antonina Antonio, Ngirur Umang, Antonia Orrukem, and Myotel Kloulchad are experts teaching weaving and performing arts. Woodcarving is taught by Benson Adelbai and spear-making is taught by Tommy Tadao Sakuma.

Basic Japanese and Basic Mandarin each have fifteen (15) participants from private companies such as Palasia Hotel, Carp Corporation, Nishimatsu Construction Company, as well as PCC and other self-employed individuals who just wanted to learn the language. Basic Japanese is in its third week and Carlissa Ngiralmau has been teaching her students some basic Japanese reading and conversation and will continue to do so until July 25th, when her class is scheduled to end.

On the other hand, Huan Yin Wei, who has been teaching the Mandarin class for the past three weeks, ended her class today and will be returning back home at the end of the week. All the participants of the Mandarin class would like to thank Huan Yin Wei for teaching them and bid her farewell.

Now is your chance to learn and understand the language spoken by over a third of the world's population.
