UH-Hilo Officials Visit for Potential Online
Nursing Program |
||
|
|
Three professors from the University of Hawaii (UH)- Hilo arrived on island late Tuesday to research on a possible collaboration between UH- Hilo and PCC in offering on-line courses in Nursing. Similar to the PCC San Diego State University (SDSU) on-line program set-up, the proposed program will enable PCC nursing students to obtain their bachelor's degree in nursing from UH- Hilo without leaving Palau. Director of Kipuka Native Hawaiian Education Center, Gail Makuakane-Lundin; Nurse CARE Project Manager, Emress Matsumoto; and Nurse CARE Project Director, Dr. Cecilia Mukai, who met with President Tellei and PCC's management team, said that their visit to Palau is basically to conduct a feasibility study to determine if the local need and interest is sufficient, and that if the PCC and Palau Ministry of Health's technologies and facilities are capable of hosting such a program. The group said that if the feasibility study supports the proposed
on-line program, a grant from UH- Hilo (Nurse CARE- Career Advancement
Retention Education), could be used to fund the program's start-up. |

EMS Conducts Workshop for UBMS Participants |
||
|
The Environmental/Marine Science (EMS) faculty and students conducted a workshop for the Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS) participants on the morning of June, 20, 2008 at the PCC Continuing Education (CE) training room. Activities of the workshop included presentations by the famous Japanese contemporary artist and environmentalist, Hiro Yamagata. Guest speaker Yamagata spoke to the students about the importance of protecting the environment, particularly coral reefs. He also told the students how impressed he was with how well preserved the environment here in Palau is. |
EMS students also gave a presentation about Taoch era Idederach, its mangroves and habitat which borders the northern end of the campus. They also discussed characteristics of each of the mangroves, which they later used in a field activity with the UBMS participants at Taoch era Idederach. PCC instructor Vernice Yuji who organized the workshop, said that
the workshop was not only educational for the students, but it also fulfills some
of the objectives under the Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority
Participation- Science, Technology, Engineering,
and Mathematics (LSAMP-STEM) project. Objectives include recruiting
high school students and conducting academic skills workshops to
improve students' academic preparedness and abilities specific to STEM disciplines. |
