Alumni Earns Master's Degree from The Ohio State,
Joins World's Biggest Auditing Firm
By: Usong Telei, PCC Work-Study Student, with assistance from PCC Work-Study Student Katosang Katosang, Upward Bound Work-Study students Elway Ikeda, Glowy Demei, and WIA student worker Tatekoi Felix.

"In order to be successful, one must decide exactly what to accomplish, and then resolve to pay the price to get it" (Bunker Hunt). Laureen Joseph, a former resident of the Republic of Palau and alumni of PCC, has paid that price with the strenuous effort she has put into her education. That effort paid off earlier this year when Laureen was recruited to work for one of the largest public auditing firms in the world.

Laureen's path to success began here at PCC where she completed two years and received an Associate of Arts Degree in Liberal Arts. She was selected as the College's valedictorian in 2003. After graduating from the College, Laureen went abroad to the United States to attend Grand Valley State University (GVSU) in Michigan. There she worked towards a B.B.A in accounting, which she received in 2006. Her skills as a student and the hard work she put into her classes became apparent once more when she became the sole Michigan undergraduate student to receive a University Fellowship to attend The Ohio State University. The fellowship presented Laureen with a full-ride to pursue her studies in the University's (The Ohio State) Master of Science in Accounting program. In school, Laureen carried a full course-load of sixteen (16) credits; full-time students usually take just twelve (12) credits. In addition to her courses, Laureen spent her time volunteering to file tax forms and returns for low-income families that are not able to afford professional accounting/auditing services. Her fine example in applying what she learned to help those less fortunate than her makes the College proud to claim her as one of our own. Her studies culminated this year on June 10th when she received her Master's degree from the program. The graduates from the University this year were privileged to have former United States President Bill Clinton as their keynote speaker.

After her graduation earlier this year is when all the effort that Laureen gave came into fruition. Laureen was recruited directly from the University to work

at Price Waterhouse Coopers. In her own words, Laureen describes the company as, "...the largest public accounting firm, and the largest professional services firm in the world. It is the largest of the `Big Four' accounting firms, the other three being Deloitte, Ernst and Young, and KPMG. The firm provides auditing, tax and consulting services to big companies, most of them publicly traded in the Fortune 500. It has offices in 149 countries with over 140,000 employees and reported revenues of $22 billion in 2006. I will be starting as an audit associate in the Audit and Assurance Services practice of the San Francisco office. We are divided into broad industry categories and I'm in the Investment Management group which audits investment firms and mutual funds...". In July, Laureen will begin her move to San Francisco. She will be studying for her Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exams. There are four parts to the exams and she will begin the first two parts after she has moved to San Francisco, and will complete the other two parts later this year in November. Laureen is the daughter of Lorenza Joseph who works for PCC as a Business Office Accountant/Supervisor.

Congratulations, Laureen and best of luck in all your endeavors!

Fourteen (14) participants from Palau Community Action Agency (PCAA) participated in the Bus Training hosted by the Operations & Maintenance Improvement Program (OMIP) that began last week and will conclude today. This program started 10 years ago and has mostly trained Ministry of Education (MOE) employees in the maintenance and up-keep of their buses. PCC instructor Eugene Uehara trained the participants from PCAA. Congratulations to the participants for completing their training! OMIP is able to host numerous training programs for the community such as computer training, air conditioning & refrigeration training, and many more as it receives half of its funding from Palau and the other half from the United States Department of Interior.

Our Condolences

On behalf of the PCC Board of Trustees, Administration, Faculty, Staff, and Students, President Dr. Patrick U. Tellei would like to extend heartfelt sympathies and deepest condolences to the families of the Late Former Senator Peter Lawrence Naoya Sugiyama and Retired Construction Technology Instructor William "Myos" Mobel.

The Sugiyama family has always been a great supporter of the College, especially the College's Endowment Fund. Mobel whose wife Anne works in the Business Office and sister Karen who works in the Human Resource office, was no stranger to the College as he was a Blueprint Reading instructor for many years.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this most difficult time of sorrow and grief.

Summer Reading Program Available for Elementary Students

Palau librarians gather for a picture after their workshop last week at PCC Btaches building.

The Palau Association of Libraries (PAL) is hosting a reading program this summer for elementary students to promote and encourage reading as a lifelong habit, and to enhance students' skills in basic reading such as comprehension, summarizing, recognizing main ideas main characters, simple bibliographic entry, and vocabulary learning.

This program will begin next week, June 25th until July 20th, 2007. As an incentive for the students to read, there will be four categories with winning prizes from first to third place: Category 1- first & second graders; Category 2- third & fourth graders; Category 3- fifth & sixth

graders; Category 4- seventh & eighth graders. To win the special prizes given by PAL, students borrow books from the school library, or read books they have at home already, but the home books must be shown to the librarian for approval. Students will have to fill a book report page after they read the book, and submit the completed forms to the librarian by due date set by the librarian. Participants can ask the library staff at their local library circulation desk for the book report form when registering.

In collaboration with PAL, PCC will help jump start this program. All the libraries in Palau will also take part in this program, so if you have further questions or want to join the program, please contact your state/local library.

Correction to Last Week's Issue...

In last week's issue of $1.6 Million to Fund PCC-UB Program for Next Five Years, it stated that PCC- UB will receive $339, 381 dollars every year. However, it should have stated that PCC-UB will receive at a minimum $339,381 dollars during the first year. It also should have stated that PCC-UB's grant proposal was one of the 775 funded proposals, not 755.
