PCC Applauds Exceptional Students with Outstanding Marks

By: Elway Ikeda, PCC Work-study student

The College would like to take a moment to acknowledge the outstanding students who have excelled academically throughout the 2008 spring. The College congratulates all the students who made the President's List, and the Dean's List (High Honor and Honor). It is a testament of your hard work and dedication that you all have achieved such academic accomplishments and have thus set yourselves as role models for your peers to emulate during the upcoming semesters. Congratulations for a job well done. We are all very proud of you!

Students enrolled in the various summer classes offered at PCC.

Even though it's summer break, Palau Community College (PCC) is still accommodating students and offering summer courses for all eighteen programs. Over two hundred students have taken advantage and enrolled for classes this summer. Out of all the programs offered, the Education program holds the most number of students with fifty-eight (58). This may be due to the fact that the teachers from all over Palau are taking advantage of the summer break and

trying to pursue their degrees, as also required of them by the Ministry of Education. Other students decided to enroll in the other programs: four (4) students in the Air Conditioning & Refrigeration program and Agricultural Science; twenty-three (23) in Auto Mechanic Technology; seven (7) in Business Accounting, Business Administration, and Criminal Justice; sixteen (16) in Construction Technology; nine (9) in Environmental/Marine Science; ten (10) in Electrical Technology; twenty-three (23) in General Electronics Technology; two (2) in Information Technology; fifteen (15) in Liberal Arts; nine (9) in Library & Information Services; one (1) in Nursing; forty-six (46) in Office Administration; seven (7) in Small Engine & Outboard Marine Technology; and nineteen (19) in Tourism & Hospitality, while sixteen (16) are Undeclared and ten (10) are Unclassified. PCC welcomes all students, both new and returning, to the College and wishes them the best of luck!

UBMS Hosts Rock Island Picnic
By: Uriik Tamara Luii, Upward Bound Work-Study Student

Last Friday, the Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) office hosted a get- together for the UBMS participants at Ngkesill island. The trip was an activity for the participants from the different high schools around the island, both old and new to get to know each other and make new friends. UBMS advisors/counselors also took advantage and oriented the students about their upcoming summer activities.

UBMS is one of the TRIO programs on PCC campus that helps prepare high school students for college programs that lead to careers in math and science. UBMS services include thorough instructions in math and science, as well as hands-on experience; opportunities to be trained from mathematicians and scientists; and a summer instructional constituent.

Continuing Education students, Su also offered translation services to other government agencies such as the Palau Visitor's Authority and the Belau National Museum. Ambassador Lee said he was happy to know that the volunteer program with PCC is progressing successfully and attributed its success to the commitment and dedication of volunteers such as Su.

Su arrived in Palau about a year ago to take on a six-month teaching assignment with the College, but grew fond of her students and the College and decided to stay on for another half year. "It has been a great experience teaching at PCC. In addition to sharing my language skills with my students, I am grateful to say that I have learned a lot from them about the beautiful island of Palau and its unique culture. It has been a wonderfully enriching experience for me. Palau is so beautiful and I know I will come back," Su told work-study student writers for the Mesekiu's News yesterday.

She concluded her classes last month and is now working on her post-assignment report for the College and also for the Taiwan's Ministry of Education. She is due to return back to Taiwan by month's end where she will spend a month with her family before departing for her new teaching post at Western Washington University in America.
