PCC & PICRC Holds Coral Taxonomy Workshop
A coral taxonomy workshop which is budgeted through the College in collaboration with Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) was held on June 2 - 6, 2008. The specific goal of this workshop was to support the development of coral reference collections for each of the islands served by the Advanced Technological Education (ATE) program. Dr. Robert van Woesik, a Florida Institute of Technology professor and a PICRC consultant on coral reef monitoring, conducted the workshop. Participants from participating institutions included: Robert Richmond (UH- Manoa, Hawaii); Don Hess (College of the Marshall Islands); Glen Keaton (Northern Marianas College); Brian Lynch (College Of Micronesia); Francis Le'iato (American Samoa Community College); Vernice Yuji (PCC); Sherry Ngirmeriil (PCC); and Geraldine Rengiil (PCC). Three PCC Environmental/Marine Science students and an employee of the Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) also took part in the workshop. |

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Current Research Information System (CRIS) has approved a Cooperative Research & Extension (CRE) research project entitled Biological Control of the Siam Weed by Using an Arctiid Moth, Pareuchaetes pseudoinsulata Rego Barros. This would enable the project to utilize a portion of the Hatch Funds being allocated to the College of Micronesia yearly by the USDA. The research project proposal written by Dr. Nelson M. Esguerra deals with importing the biological control agent, an arctiid moth, Pareuchaetes pseudoinsulata from an SPC laboratory in Pohnpei, FSM. Once in Palau, the insect will be reared in the laboratory and research will be conducted on its life cycle and behavior. Specific studies will also be carried out to be sure that once |
the insect is released in the field, it will not feed on other crops but Siam weed. This will be the second insect to be released for the control of the siam weed. The first one is a gallfly, Cecidochares connexa, which makes extensive galls on shoots and stems of the weed. The larvae of P. pseudoinsulata, on the other hand, feed voraciously on the leaves of the Siam weed. Therefore, its release will further reduce the threat of the weed to the native vegetation by complementing the effect being done by the gallflies. Another PCC-CRE project entitled Seed Production of Mangrove Crabs
(Scylla serrata) in Palau has also been recently
approved by the United States
Department of Agriculture (USDA) Cooperative State Research Education and
Extension Service (CSREES). The Hatch Funds will also be used to fund this project
until December 2011. |

(Continued from front page) As proposed by CRE's Aquaculturist, Miguel Delos Santos, this project aims to develop and improve hatchery technique to produce mangrove crab juveniles in Palau. Mangrove crabs are highly valued seafood commodities that are endemic in the country. Farming these crabs either in ponds or in mangrove pens is considered a lucrative aquaculture business. Continuous production, however, is hampered due to the limited supply of seedstock from the wild. Using the existing hatchery facility in Palau such as that of the Bureau of Marine Resources (BMR), a series of larval rearing activities using the wild mangrove crab broodstock will be conducted. The success of this project would provide a steady supply of mangrove crab juveniles that would promote sustainable production and eventually benefit the local mangrove crab growers in the country. |
