Salvador Again Recipient of Charlie Corn Scholarship
By: Elway Ikeda, Upward Bound Work-Study Student

Shane Salvador, PCC alumni and recipient of Charlie Corn Scholarship.

Shane Salvador, a PCC Alumni received notification earlier this week that he has once again been selected the Palau recipient of the Charlie Corn Scholarship. This time it is for the amount of $2500 dollars. The scholarship was formally presented to Salvador by the Civil Action Team (CAT) during President Remengesau's weekly press conference last Wednesday. Salvador who was a two-term student trustee during his two-years (2005-2007) at PCC said

that this time the money will be used to get him started at California State University- Chico this fall semester as he begins his studies in engineering.

During his two years at PCC (2005-2007) Salvador applied for and received $2000 each year from the same organization. Salvador is the second Palauan who has been the recipient of the Charlie Corn Scholarship. Osmochel Orak, a graduate of Palau High School, was the first. The scholarship is awarded by the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), a group of military engineers promoting education. The scholarship is awarded to students who are majoring, or intending to major in architecture and engineering, and its purpose is to promote education among Micronesians and residents of Guam who are pursuing careers in architecture and engineering.

Salvador recently graduated from Palau Community College, with an Associate of Arts Degree in Liberal Arts.

He was an outstanding student, popular among his classmates and always involved in spearheading campus and community functions for PCC students.

Salvador wishes to thank SAME for the continued financial support. He also thanks his instructor Karen Miovas and counselor Adora Nobuo-Andreas for their support. He also wants to encourage students who wish to major in engineering or architecture to apply for the scholarship. "It is a wonderful opportunity for students", said Shane in an interview with Mesekiu reporter, Elway Ikeda- Upward Bound Work-Study student. He also said that applying for the scholarship is simple. All that it requires is the completion of the application form and submission of a transcript together with two recommendation letters...and of course you must have good grades!

Salvador will be leaving in August to California.

Congratulations from all of us at the College! We are all very proud of you!

Tellei who presented a traditional Palauan story board as a parting gift to Huang during the luncheon said that even though Huang's assignment was brief, he was nevertheless pleased with her performance. Indeed pleased with Huang's performance, Tellei further said the College will be more than happy to welcome Huang back if her future plans allow it. Cafeteria Crew Get Busy for Summer
By: Usong Telei, PCC Work-Study Student with assistance from PCC Work-Study Student Katosang Katosang and Upward Bound Work-Study Student, Elway Ikeda

Throughout the summer months, the PCC Cafeteria is one of the busiest places on campus. The food and beverage arm of the College caters not just to students living in the dorms, but to a portion of the incoming freshmen, and even to outside groups that request food preparation and meal services. Rosita Weilbacher, Food Service Coordinator, says that there are twenty (20) college students from the FSM, Palau, and Marshall Islands living in the dorms who need three meals a day. Also the Upward Bound Math and Science program has four (4) of its students housed in the dorms and they too need three meals a day. That is a daily minimum of 24 breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. Weilbacher also said that they also prepare daily lunches for 60 Upward Bound program students, including 55 lunches for the Upward Bound Math and Science program students.

In addition to all the meals it prepares for all the students, the cafeteria also caters to outside groups. The Student Partnership Conference held last week required a total of 500 meals a day for three days while the Summer Work Experience Program required 200 meals for a day. The total amount of meals prepared by cafeteria staff in just those five days neared 2,500.

During the recent Belau Games, the cafeteria staff also prepared lunch and dinner for Ngaraard and Melekeok athletes. We thank the cafeteria staff for all their work in ensuring that meal services are provided to all students and members of the community.

BITS AND PIECES...

Classified Staff Organization Meets...

After their meeting this week, the classified staff at the College have covered a wide range of work-related issues. They met to review the organization's "by laws" and further discussed the insurance coverage that most, if not all, the employees at the College are covered by. This form of organization gives the opportunity for staff to raise concerns regarding their work and help each other improve in their respective fields.

Update on Dengue Fever- Community Advocacy Program (CAP)

The Bureau of Public Health would like to inform the Public that the number of dengue fever cases has risen. As of June 26,2007, the number of confirmed dengue cases has risen to fourteen (14), while the number of suspected cases has risen to thirty-five (35). Although the number of confirmed cases is slowly rising, Public Health advises the community to continue taking preventive measures against Dengue Fever. New test kits have arrived at the Belau National Hospital and the lab is now able to test for dengue locally. So five (5) of the confirmed cases were tested and confirmed at the Belau National Hospital.

The EpiNet or Epidemiologist Network at the Ministry of Health continues to

work together to keep track of the dengue cases. The Division of Environmental Health urges the community to make sure that their home surroundings are clean and do not contribute to mosquito breeding areas. Especially now that we've been having so much rain, there could be better chances of the dengue carrying mosquitoes to breed and cause more dengue fever in our community. The Bureau of Public Health continues to remind the community to take preventive measures like using insect repellents (with DEET), mosquito coils, and sprays to keep mosquitoes away. Especially the dengue carrying mosquitoes. If you have any questions, please contact the Division of Environmental Health at 488-6073 or the Communicable Disease Unit at 488-2450.
