PCC President Dr. Patrick U. Tellei met last Thursday in the boardroom with the Honorable Matthew S. Lee, the new Republic of China- Taiwan ambassador to the Republic of Palau. The meeting which was a first between the two since Ambassador Lee took over the head role at the embassy in late December of last year, focused on further bolstering the long-established cordial working relationship between the Embassy of the ROC-Taiwan and Palau Community College. During the meeting, President Tellei welcomed Ambassador Chen's willingness to continue supporting on-going programs such as the Mandarin Language Instructor Program where the Taiwan's Ministry of Education provides a volunteer language (Mandarin) instructor to PCC, and also the various human resources training opportunities in Taiwan extended to college employees every year. Tellei said that the College has benefited tremendously from a number of |
specialized training sponsored by the ROC- Taiwan government and the embassy under former Ambassador Clark K. H. Chen, and is pleased that they will continue under the leadership of Ambassador Lee. Tellei specifically asked that more training opportunities be made available in the field of Aqua-culture. Lee and Tellei also agreed that the Taiwan Technical Mission in Palau and the PCC Cooperative Research and Extension department can and should step up their combined effort, especially in the area of taro culture and cultivation to benefit local taro farmers. In addition to being a basic food staple, taro has become a leading cash crop for many growers. Lee and Tellei concluded their meeting both in agreement that priority should be given to securing a Mandarin language instructor, and the strengthening of joint work between the Taiwan Technical Mission and the PCC-CRE. |

Ramirez Follows His Parents' Footsteps |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
To many who have worked and are still working at the College, the name Ramirez sounds familiar. This is because, Mr. Patricio Ramirez, |
a Pohnpeian, and Mrs. Haraline Route Ramirez, a Kosraean- Pohnpeian, attended MOC in the late 70's. As a matter of fact, MOC is where they met and got married. In addition, Patricio Ramirez was PCC President's carpentry classmate and both graduated in 1980. Patricio currently works at the College of Micronesia (COM) as a Student Services Assistant while Mrs. Ramirez works as a Secretary to Executive Director, Dr. Singeru Singeo of COM Land Grant Office. Now, their son, Roger Ramirez, is attending PCC. |
Other than the fact that his desired major, General Electronics Technology, was available here, Ramirez transferred from COM after his first semester because he wanted to follow his parents' footsteps and attend the same college. Ramirez arrived last week and plans to stay at PCC until he receives his AS degree before furthering his education in Hawaii. He hopes to do well in his classes and take what he will learn here at PCC to wherever he is going and make the best out of it. He wants to become a good electrician and a good businessman. |

Asked what he thinks about Palau and PCC campus, he commented, " Palau is beautiful and PCC campus is good. I like PCC because it has office and building signs so at least I won't get lost. I've already started my first week of class and so far, I like my classes and my teachers". Ramirez is staying at the PCC dormitory and has made friends, mostly from the Federated States of Micronesia, but he hopes to make new friends from Palau and other countries as soon as he gets settled. |
