Welcome All Students! |

|
The Palau Community College administration, faculty, and staff welcome all students back from the fall recess and extends a warm welcome to all the returning, readmitted, and new students who enrolled this 2008 spring semester. Best wishes for a successful semester! Stay tuned to These Networks. School can be a frightening place for
new students. People of diverse cultures, older students, commuters, and
people with special needs can feel excluded. Some people attend classes for
years and still feel they are standing alone on the outside, looking in. Introduce yourself to classmates. Get to class early and break the ice by discussing the holidays. Plan to meet people. Write an Intention Statement promising to meet three new people each week. Plan who these people will be and how and when you intend to meet them. See your instructor. If you feel lost in a class, make an appointment to see your instructor outside class. You might discover a human being who wants you to succeed. Join a Club. A Builders club, Tourism & Hospitality club, Agriculture club, and Environmental club can put you in touch with potential friends. Form a study group. Peer pressure can be positive. Study with students who excel and also look for partners from different racial, ethnic, or religious |
backgrounds. Diversity will add depth to your group and stimulate everyone's thinking. Play ball!! You don't have to be a world-class athlete to play sports. As a matter of fact, keeping fit is one of the marks of a master student. Most schools have intramural leagues, and PCC definitely has intramural sports for you to take advantage of! Use school media. School newspapers can alert you to interesting activities and people. Bulletin boards can be sources of information about clubs and social activities. Also, check the school catalog. Study at the library. It's quiet, it's comfortable, and it's a place to meet other serious students. Use Student Services. These include career planning, testing services, counseling services, student health services, financial aid, student body association, student organizations and student activities. These services are free to students. Going to school puts you in contact with an extraordinary network of services. All that remains is for you to use them. |

PCC Welcomes Five New Faces to the College Faculty! |
|
|
As we enter the New Year and a new Spring Semester, there are new beginnings, new changes, and new faces. |
Therefore, the College would like to first welcome and introduce Bernadette Kelderman, our new Science instructor. Kelderman taught at the College in previous years and has once again committed herself to teach this semester. Another new instructor is Danka Ledgerwood, an Office Administration and Computer Science instructor. Ledgerwood, a native of Slovakia, is no stranger to the islands as she lived in Yap State, FSM before moving to Palau. Elicita Morei, another familiar face, is returning to teach English. The Civic Action Team Officer-In-Charge, Captain Matthew Caudell is helping this semester as a Math instructor. Uroi Salii, an assistant instructor last semester, is now one of the Business instructors. In order for PCC to maintain its quality of excellence, the College prides itself in hiring the best talent Palau has to offer. We are confident that our new instructors exemplify this quality and will be valuable assets in the College's effort to provide the best services to our students. The College is proud to have these special individuals join the PCC team, and we are positive that they will make a significant contribution to the growth and development of our College for many years to come. Welcome aboard! |

EMS Students Volunteer to Save the Corals |
||
|
Work on the expansion of Palau Royal Resort (PRR) pool was expected to begin soon and concerned citizens wanted to save as much of the marine life in the area. The Environmental/Marine Science (EMS) students were invited by Anisa Hanser, an alumnus of the College employed at PRR, to help save the corals in the shallow waters near the beachside wall of the hotel on Wednesday (01/09/2008). Seven students gladly responded to the call to assist in saving some of the corals. The students worked hard to move some of the branching corals to a safe area, away from the area expected to be affected by the hotel's pool expansion. The EMS students who volunteered were Edenson Haruo, John Stills, Ngelulei Ililau, Renee Benardo, Shelley Remengesau, Zenaida Orak, and |
Zilah Oiterong. The students commented that although they were not able to completely move everything, they were satisfied and very happy that they did something. They also would like to remind every reader of Mesekiu's News that doing little things like this for our small island is better than not doing anything at all. Not only did they save some of the corals, they had a chance during lunch break to reflect and make resolutions amongst themselves. The students are commended for their willingness to participate in such a worthy cause, and demonstrating their selflessness to conserve and protect the corals not for themselves, but for future generations. On a last note, the students would like to express their appreciation to the PRR management for the pizza, sandwiches, fries, and drinks. |
