Cultural Trip Takes ETS Students to Ngarchelong State

Revisiting the old Palauan custom "Klechedaol", Koror Elementary School (K.E.S) students who are participants of the Educational Talent Search (ETS) Program went on an overnight field trip to Ngarchelong as a Klechedaol last weekend. The field trip was arranged by both the principals of Koror and Ngarchelong elementary schools.

Ngarchelong Chief Uong Victor Joseph and Governor Browny Salvador saw the importance of this educational/cultural trip and welcomed the K.E.S. students as honorary guests.

This trip was to reflect the basic studies of Palauan culture that is taught in the classroom, including the regular curriculum. Guest Speaker Sanders Kloulechad elaborated more on the meaning of Klechedaol and why Palauans practiced such activities. Haruo Salvador, who was one of the honorary guests, explained how Ngarchelong people have maintained their customary practices through two colonial administrations, first the Japanese and then the American.

Talent Search tutors, Epsie West, Kabidor Taima, and Joyce Kloulechad played a major role in this event by

EMS Club Conducts Workshop for UBMS Students

SSS-Project Beacon's Valentine Activity

On Thursday, February 14, 2008 SSS-Project Beacon conducted a special Valentine's Day Activity in the afternoon. The activity comprised of a workshop entitled "Study Skills & Test Taking Strategies," "Valentine Card Making," and a late afternoon matinee, entitled "The Lake House." A total of thirty-eight (38) students participated in the workshop, thirty-two (32) students in the card making activity, and twenty (20) at the afternoon matinee.

Prior to the beginning of the workshop, an ice-breaker had the students howling with laughter as they tried to interpret word riddles that resulted in hilarious antics. The fun and laughter made the students comfortable, relaxed and ready to tackle the workshop session. The workshop covered strategies to studying and test taking. Students were also provided tips for taking specific types of tests that included Multiple Choice, Matching and Essay Test. Since it was Valentine's Day, it was only appropriate that the activity following the workshop was creating Valentine cards. An air of excitement and a flurry of activities permeated the room as scissors cut, decorative stamps thudded, and glitter flew as students worked on their Valentine's masterpieces. Students enjoyed the Valentine card making so much that though some of them had to go to class, they returned afterwards to complete their cards. A winning card was supposed to be selected but as it turned out, participants outdid themselves and it was difficult to choose the winning

A workshop on the Environmental/ Marine Science (EMS) program of the College was conducted last Friday by the EMS Club for the Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS) students. The workshop was held in the Continuing Education (CE) Training room. Sheena Henry and John Stills, along with other program students, gave presentations on the program and club, respectively. Henry emphasized the significance of the EMS program to the students, stating that the program is to help students understand the management and effective conservation of our country's natural resources. She also provided information on the

courses one would need to take in the program, and financial assistance such as scholarships which help to aid the cost of education for students. As for Stills, his presentation was more focused on the EMS club. He talked about the various activities that the club takes part in such as trash-a-thons, fundraising, and even clean-ups. Rather brief, the workshop was informative and interesting. It is always our hope to recruit more students into the EMS program. If anything, we wish to have made an impression on the UBMS students-even if in a minute way- to have them consider enrolling in the EMS program after high school.

How do you Define Laziness?

"I want what I want, when I want it", sums up Pastor Robert Watt as the root of laziness during this month's "Tuesday Night" program held at the Cafeteria. Quoting bible verses, Pastor Watt, from the Pacific Islands Bible College, explains to the dorm students the "Craziness of Laziness" and how to be better, productive individuals. He also urged the students to reject the lifestyle of shortcuts such as Addictions, Stealing,

and Sexual Immortality as they are forms of laziness… "Earn it, Save, Buy! Don't take the easy way out", he says. He also challenged the students saying, "The challenge is to correct the mistakes while the ball is still within a hundred feet…you need to make the adjustments early on".

The Student Life office and the students thank Pastor Watt for making time to share his knowledge and also thank the cafeteria staff for the tasty snacks. The "Tuesday Night" program, sponsored by the Student Life office, is held every last Tuesday of the month to provide healthy lifestyle information for the dormitory students so that they can be better students, individuals, and members of the community.

Valentine card. As a result, in celebration of our artistically talented students an upcoming art contest is in the planning. Lastly, an afternoon matinee was held, the movie of course had to have a "love" theme to coincide with the special day. As usual, questionnaires were filled out after the matinee to get students to practice their analytical, critical, and writing skills.

Aside from basic program services that include Instruction, Tutoring, and Counseling, a series of activities are conducted as well each semester. The purpose of these activities is to create opportunities where students can learn, have fun, and become better acquainted with each other and with staff. The idea is to actively engage students, not just in the classroom, but outside as well so they can enjoy college life and hopefully remain enrolled until they graduate.

Upcoming program activities for the remainder of this month and March include an on-going participation of the SSS-PB team in the PCC Co-Ed Intramural Softball Tournament, Mid-Term Study Marathons set for Friday & Monday, February 29 and March 3, 2008, an art contest, cultural site visit, etc. Look forward to future articles and pictures about our students' upcoming fun & learning activities.
