A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed earlier this week by Palau Community College and the Palau National Scholarship Board formalizes procedures for financial support such as grants, scholarship, or loans to students who enroll in "non-traditional" educational programs at Palau Community College.

Recognizing the success of the nontraditional method of instruction at Palau Community College such as the online San Diego State University bachelor's and master's degree curriculum, the MOU says that it is in the best interest of the Republic of Palau to support such program offerings at Palau Community College.

The MOU also recognizes the benefit of the online degree program saying that it "reduces emigration of Palauan technical, professional, and executive labor" by allowing

individuals in the labor force to obtain their professional degrees and advance themselves professionally without leaving the island.

Under the MOU, funding will be available to qualified students seeking bachelor, master and even doctoral degrees in programs identified based on the development needs of the Republic of Palau.

The Palau Community College- San Diego State University online degree program has helped a number of PCC as well as government employees, especially Ministry of Education employees attain their bachelor and master degrees in the field of Educational Leadership.

Students enrolled in the PCC-SDSU master's program are expected to graduate this summer while the bachelor's cohort is slated for fall.

Mesekiu Baseball in First Place with 6-1 Record

Last Friday, Mesekiu Baseball secured sole possession of the first place spot in the Palau Major League Baseball 2008 season. They did so by defeating for the second time defending champions Airai Aces.

PCC scored early in the top of the first with Merei Ise and Dekei Ngiramengior reaching base on consecutive errors by the Airai defense. A single by Kalei Luii brought in Merei and advanced Dekei to scoring base. Another RBI single by Sureor Ngirailemesang scored Dekei for an early 2 run lead. Airai quickly evened the score on a pair of singles by Allen Tesai and Regan Sidoi and a double by Herman Alfonso. Airai took the lead in the fourth when Ulaol Ngirblekuu crossed the plate, and further increased to 4-2 in the fifth when Reagan scored. Cleofas Iyar and Ty Saiske scored in the sixth for PCC to even the score. In the seventh, PCC took a 6-5 advantage when Dekei singled and scored on Kalei Luii's RBI single. In the 8th inning, PCC put the game out of reach as they displayed their patent offense. Ty led off on base-on-balls and reached 3rd on a double by

Merei. With both speedsters on scoring bases, Dekei singled to bring them both home. The cleanup hitter Kaleb Meltel did not disappoint as he tripled to score Dekei, and later scoring on a single by Kalei Luii. Ace pitcher Sureor Ngirailemesang blanked Airai the rest of the game for the final score of 9-4. Cleofas had 2 strike outs and Sureor had 6, allowing only four hits.

According to team manager Todd Ngiramengior, he is happy with the team's performance, and is convinced that it is their strict training regiment that has put them in first place. "We take our practice seriously, starting our preparation in October, months before the opening of the season and I am happy the results reflect that," he said. "Our overall performance also gives me the liberty to give our second and third string players valuable field time, and this will benefit the team in the long run," he added. The team's roster is the biggest this season with 26 players.
