Wanting to show the diversity of cultures here at PCC, the Associated Students of Palau Community College (ASPCC) held its first International Night on Friday November 23, 2007 for all PCC students as well as the community. It was a variety show which gave a chance for all the Micronesians at Palau Community College to showcase their cultures through a fashion show, through traditional dances, basket weaving, and songs.

The program began as ASPCC Vice President-Elect Heston A. Kebou gave the opening remarks, welcoming and thanking everyone for attending PCC's 1st International Night. Also taking into consideration the traditional Palauan way

 BPS Chief Aquon Encourages Students to Live Without Alcohol & Drugs

Chief Ismael Aquon answering questions from the students regarding his presentation on Alcohol & Drugs.

Alcohol and Drugs education and awareness was the focus of attention during November's "Tuesday Night" Program which was held at the PCC cafeteria. Bureau of Public Safety (BPS) Chief Ismael Aquon shared information with the hundred students about the deadly and disastrous use of alcohol and drugs and how they can avoid using them.

Working in the police force for a substantial number of years and experiencing how people have violated the laws relating to alcohol and drug use, Chief Aquon warns students saying, "Using alcohol and drugs is a one way street. The further you go down the wrong road, the longer, the more difficult and impossible it will take to get back. You will be sent to jail, have an addiction problem, have severe depression, have serious injury, or perhaps even die". He then encouraged students to "believe and have self respect", giving them pointers that will help lead them to success such as the importance of listening to one's parents; paying attention to teachers; participating in sports or other healthy activities; maintaining self discipline; and never giving up, just to name a few. He also urged the students to spend their free time wisely, especially during the

upcoming holiday break saying, "fill your baskets with all the tools you will need to go on your journey, because your tomorrow depends on what you do today".

Student Life office as well as the PCC students would like to express their gratitude to Chief Aquon for giving an interesting presentation. They would also like to thank the cafeteria staff for the delicious snacks.

of commencing a special gathering, Baulbei Isechal chanted to traditionally open the program. The fashion show then began with students from Palau, Kosrae, Pohnpei, Marshall Islands, Yap, and Chuuk modeling their amazingly colorful and decorative traditional attires. After the fashion show, cultural performances from Palau, RMI, and from each FSM state began. Palau was first in the lineup with one of the students performing delang followed by the young ladies who performed delal a ngloik. Kosraean students came next performing their stick dance called Masfia (sra-loh-tohl). Then, four students from Pohnpei wove baskets that are traditionally used to carry local food. To elaborate it clearly, the Pohnpei students used coconuts to put on the baskets and presented them to VP Jay Olegeriil, Dean Alvina Timarong, Dean Marensia Edward, as well as their advisor Keiden Skilang. Afterwards, they performed a dance called "Bustop".

The Marshallese students then entered the stage singing and playing their ukuleles, while some of the young men performed a war dance. Then, one courageous Yapese student went on stage and serenaded the crowd with a couple of Yapese songs. Before concluding the performances with the Palauan contemporary dance, the young Chuukese men performed their war dance.

The Associated Students of Palau Community College wish to thank the following people for their contributions and donations as this 1st International Night could not have been as successful without them: Board of Trustees Chairperson, Bilung Gloria G. Salii; PCC President, Dr. Patrick U. Tellei; Vice President, Jay Olegeriil; Dean of Academic Affairs, Alvina Timarong; Dean of Students, Marensia Edward; Director of Student Life, Deikola Olikong; Ismael Anastacio; Shelley Remengesau; Tourism Club;

Strategy for Taking Tests
Taken from Study Tips.com at http://www.how-to-study.com

The DETER Strategy for Taking Tests
To do well on a test, you must have good knowledge of the information that is being tested. But you must also have a strategy for taking the test that allows you to show what you know. The DETER strategy can help you do your best on any test. Each letter in DETER reminds you what to do.

D = Directions
• Read the test directions very carefully.
• Ask your teacher to explain anything about the test directions you do not understand
• Only by following the directions can you achieve a good score on the test.
• If you do not follow the directions, you will not be able to demonstrate what you know.

E = Examine
• Examine the entire test to see how much you have to do.
Only by knowing the entire task can you break it down into parts that become manageable for you.

T = Time
Once you have examined the entire test, decide how much

time you will spend on each item.
• If there are different points for items, plan to spend the most time on the items that count for the most points.
• Planning your time is especially important for essay tests where you must avoid spending so much time on one item that you have little time left for other test items.

E = Easiest
• The second E in DETER reminds you to answer the items you find easiest first.
• If you get stuck on a difficult item that comes up early in the test, you may not get to answer items that test things you know.

R = Review
• If you have planned your time correctly, you will have time to review your answers and make them as complete and accurate as possible.
• Also make sure to review the test directions to be certain you have answered all items required.

Using the DETER strategy will help you do better on tests and get better grades.
