Ungil Becheserrak, Happy New Year Palau! Next week Tuesday is New Year's Day and it's the beginning of new changes, new goals. There is nothing like another chance for a fresh start, a chance to right those wrongs, strengthen those weaknesses, and improve everything else. However, before we press on with business this 2008, let us take the opportunity to visit some of the events that were recorded by this newsletter in 2007. By doing so, we are reminded as to where, what, how, who, and why events occurred; therefore, better preparing us for the year to come. Here are some of the Mesekiu's News Headlines for 2007: January - Board of Trustees holds first organizational meeting, votes for new officers. Bilung Gloria G. Salii re-elected as Chairperson. Masa-Aki Emesiochl appointed as representative of the board to the College of Micronesia (COM) Board of Regents. - Agriculture Development in the American Pacific (ADAP) Board of Directors holds meeting in Palau. As a land grant institution under the College of Micronesia (COM) Land Grant treaty, the College is an ADAP member. - New Taiwan Envoy, Ambassador Matthew S.M. Lee meets President Dr. Patrick U. Tellei. - Japanese Aikido Grand Master, Gyoichi Mibukawa and students visit College for first time. |
February - Focused Midterm Report completed and sent to the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC). - The College of Micronesia (COM) Board of Regents holds first meeting for the year in Palau. Addresses budget, endowment investment, and selection of new officers. Masa-Aki Emesiochl appointed as chair. - Professor Hajime Oshiro of the University of the Ryukyus- Okinawa visits the College and meets President Tellei. An MOU was signed in 2000 to promote |
March - The two-member ACCJC visiting team comprised of Dr. Shirley Kelly and Dr. Lyn MacConnaire visit College. Validate college's Focused Midterm Report. - University of Guam TRIO students visit, donate $200 to the College Endowment Fund. - Committee on Program and Curricula (CPC) meets with local group comprised mainly of historians to map out plans for the establishment of a Palauan studies program. |

collaboration between the two schools. - STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) task force holds first meeting to layout initial plans for the proposed program. - Japan Foundation donates $8,000 worth of books to the PCC library. The foundation is a regular donor of books and Japanese language study materials to the College. |
- College signs Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Palau's premier hotel, Palau Pacific Resort to enhance its tourism program. - College Federal Work-Study program expands to include off-campus employment to students for first time. - SDSU professors, Barbara Moss and Marilee Bresciani on island to conduct classes for the SDSU-BA and MA cohort program. |

Holds 5K President's Run/Walk, tours Babeldaob/New Capitol Building, and hosts staff/student luncheon at Melekeok state. April - College receives $958,000 dollars from the Republic of Palau government, and $600,000 dollars in federal funding from the U.S. government. - College's Mesekiu Baseball Team wins the Palau Major League pennant for the first time. May - PCC students Carmin Pipit and Victor Nestor present research work and receive award at 2nd Environmental/Marine Science (EMS) Student Symposium. - PCC students Barbara Gbewonyo and Recobert Redhor receive international scholarships to attend Grand Valley State University (GVSU). - College holds 44th Commencement Exercises. Ninety-four students receive degrees and certificates. - Shelley Remengesau, a student majoring in Education and Environmental/Marine Science receives UMEB Internship Scholarship to study at UH-Manoa. - Library donates volumes of encyclopedias to the Palau Association of Libraries (PAL). June - PCC Upward Bound program awarded nearly $1.7 million from the U.S. DOE to fund activities for next five years. - Emrei Takeo is new SBA President after President Ramon Adelbai graduates from PCC. |
- Fredrick Ikertang, a PCC alumni, graduates with a BS in Agricultural Science from UH-Hilo. - Faculty members Eric Tomlinson, Kiblai Suzuky, Caryn Koshiba, Takashi Mita, Allan Ziegler, and Scarlette Rechirei ends stint to pursue their education and other careers. - PCC alumni Laureen Joseph receives master's degree from The Ohio State University, joins world's biggest auditing firm, Price Waterhouse Coopers in San Francisco. - Twenty-eight PCAA employees participate in PCC's first Teachers' Academy at PCC. - Continuing Education summer programs attracts over 100 elementary and high school students. - Over 30 librarians and staff participate in Library Skills Workshop at PCC. July - Trustee Masa-Aki Emesiochl, President Dr. Patrick U. Tellei, Dean Alvina Timarong, Associate Professor Wilma Sukrad, Director Deikola Olikong, Classified Staff Organization President Ephraim Ngirachitei, and Project Director Tchuzie Tadao attend the 5th Community College Leadership Development Initiative (CCLDI) leadership academy at the University of San Diego in California. - Student trustee, Shane Salvador receives the Charlie Corn Scholarship from the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME). - Rollins Mellil, a physically disabled student completes certificate program with Thomson Education Direct (TED). - PCC Cooperative Research & Extension (CRE) hatchery production of rabbitfish fingerlings successful. Eighty thousand pieces of larvae hatched. August - U.S. DOE grants Education Talent Search over $200,000 per year for next four years. - College to participate in Veterans Affairs (VA) Educational Assistance Programs. |
- Aiko Tanaka, a sophomore at Waseda University- Japan to study at PCC for one year. - PCC student Wililah F. Xavier presents field study at the 3rd Environmental/Marine Science (EMS) Student Symposium. - Fall 2007 enrollment tops 600. - Tayeko Emesiochel, a tourism & hospitality student, participates in two-week historical, cultural, and language exchange program in Osaka, Japan. - Five Yapese apprentice/trainees complete summer apprentice training with Continuing Education program. - Japan Literature Publishing Project donates six works of Japanese fiction to PCC library. September - World-renowned typhoon/tropical climate expert, Chip Guard conducts workshop on campus. - Student Leena Muller replaces graduating Shane Salvador as the new Student Trustee. - PCC Faculty Senate Association (FSA) organizes, elects new officers. - College hires four assistant instructors, Rennette Meyar, Gregory Meyar, Rose Aliven-Kohama, and Uroi Salii. - College hosts 6th anniversary of September 11. October - President Tellei attends 2007 Department of Interior's Island Business Opportunities seminar in Guam. - Mobil Oil Inc. donates over $16,000 to PCC library. - College hires Chester Lelis as Structural Engineer-Auto CAD designer. BITS AND PIECES... REMINDER Endowment Members Gathering Today... To show its appreciation to all bi-weekly donors to the PCC Endowment Fund, the College is hosting a gathering today from 11:30 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. at the PCC Courtyard (Mesekiu Bai). Members will be treated to a delicious lunch and have the chance to join in the raffle drawing and win some fabulous prizes. Tax refund forms will also be available so, please do not forget to bring a copy of your check stub for pay period 26 so that you can complete your application. For more information, please do not hesitate to call Development office at 488-2470/2471. ANNOUNCEMENT Tuesday, New Year's Holiday.... In observance of New Year's Day (Tuesday, January 1st, 2008), all Palau Community College offices will be closed. Only essential services will be provided during this day. With that, the Board of Trustees and the Administration wishes a Happy New Year to all faculty, staff, and most especially the students. ANNOUNCEMENT New Library Hours... PCC library will be having the following schedule during the Christmas break until January 13, 2008. Regular PCC library hours will resume on January 14, 2008. Job Opportunities Upward Bound Math & Science Position: Salary: From $110 - $150 bi/weekly for
(16) weeks ($880-$1,200) Job Summary: 1. Provide individual and group tutoring in the areas of each respected fields, starting from the basic subjects through the highest standard taught in high school level. 2. Monitor each participant's progress to ensure that each participant is progressing in each subject field. 3. Keep records of each participant's tutoring progress or problems. 4. Submit evaluation/recommendation report at the end of each week. 5. Perform other assigned duties as requested by the Project Director. 6. Participate in all extracurricular activities for UBMS students. Job Qualifications: 1. College sophomore classification; Bachelor's Degree is preferred. 2. Grade point average of 3.00 or higher. 3. Previous tutoring experience is preferred, especially with TRIO Programs. 4. Preference given to candidates who are from low-income and first generation background.
