College Staff and Students Off to South Pacific Games in Samoa

Armstrong Debelbot, Director of Development Office

It is not how big you are, it's how big you play.  ~Anonymous. Despite the small number of players representing Palau in the South Pacific Games (SPG), which begins today in Samoa and ends on September 8th, there walks among them players with the hearts to win and the will to match. Palauan athletes in the games come from all

walks of life and a number of those athletes walk their paths here at PCC. The SPG provides them with an opportunity to test body, mind, and spirit against other athletes from around the Pacific. Majority of them are student-athletes representing not only the College, but the entire Palau as well. Many would assume this a burden, but

Dilubch Samil, Administrative Assistant of Development Office

these athletes have been training for months and will do well in the games. Three PCC Development Office staff will also be representing Palau in the Canoe events, namely Armstrong Debelbot, Director of Development office and his two staff members, Hulda Lukas and Dilubch Samil. The College family is very proud of all of you!

APU Professor and Students Arrive to Conduct Research

Professor Nobuyuki Hatada (first row-second from right) of Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) in Oita, Japan and his students arrived this week to conduct studies on eco-tourism in Palau. This will be the 6th time that Professor Hatada has brought his students to Palau for field research.

The College is very happy to welcome once more Professor Nobuyuki Hatada of Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) in Oita, Japan and his students.

Six of Professor Hatada's students arrived five days ago while Professor Hatada arrived three days ago with two of his students. The College has been providing housing for them and will continue to do so throughout their three-week stay on island.

Professor Hatada brought with him eight students, all majoring in Tourism, to study different areas of Babeldaob and dive-sites in the Rock Islands to determine how these locations will be and in some cases have been affected by tourism.

The students will be split into two groups, each focusing on a different sustainable area of tourism. One group consisting of five students will focus on sustainable diving areas in the Rock

Islands. Three separate locations have been chosen and the group will dive those areas to determine the carrying capacity of dives for each area. The study will produce the ideal number of dives each site can sustain, and at the same time maintaining its natural balance.

The second group will concentrate on a portion of the Ngermeskang River, which may be the future site of a Kayak Tour operated by the Conservation Areas Coordinating Committee (CACC). The students will be determining the seasonal changes that take place along the river. Students will also be interviewing locals in their area of study to gauge awareness of conservation issues and knowledge of the entire Ngermeskang River area.

College Welcomes All Students!

The Palau Community College administration, faculty, and staff welcome all continuing students back from the fall recess and extends a warm welcome to all the returning, readmitted, and new students who enrolled this 2007 spring semester. Best wishes for a successful semester!

Stay tuned to These Networks. School can be a frightening place for new students. People of diverse cultures, older students, commuters, and people with special needs can feel excluded. Some people attend classes for years and still feel they are standing alone on the outside, looking in.
You don't have to be a stranger to school life. Networking is one way to break through the barriers that keep students isolated.
Students who overcome feelings of isolation increase their chances of staying in school and succeeding. Networks can also prepare students for the world of work, where most projects involve teamwork. You can begin networking immediately. Here are some techniques you can use:

Introduce yourself to classmates. Get to class early and break the ice by discussing the holidays.

Plan to meet people. Write an Intention Statement promising to meet three new people each week. Plan who these people will be and how and when you intend to meet them.

See your instructor. If you feel lost in a class, make an appointment to see your instructor outside class. You might discover a human being who wants you to succeed.

Join a Club. A Builders club, Tourism & Hospitality club, Agriculture club, and Student Body Association can put you in touch with potential friends.

Form a study group. Peer pressure can be positive. Study with students

who excel and also look for partners from different racial, ethnic, or religious backgrounds. Diversity will add depth to your group and stimulate everyone's thinking.

Play ball!! You don't have to be a world-class athlete to play sports. As a matter of fact, keeping fit is one of the marks of a master student. Most schools have intramural leagues, and PCC definitely has intramural sports for you to take advantage of!

Use school media. School newspapers can alert you to interesting activities and people. Bulletin boards can be sources of information about clubs and social activities. Also, check the school catalog.

Study at the library. It's quiet, it's comfortable, and it's a place to meet other serious students.

Use Student Services. These include career planning, testing services, counseling services, student health services, financial aid, student body association, student organizations and student activities. These services are free to students. Going to school puts you in contact with an extraordinary network of services. All that remains is for you to use them.

Japan Embassy Donates School Catalogs to PCC Library

The Embassy of Japan, in its continuing efforts to promote higher education opportunities in Japan, has donated Japanese Colleges and University catalogs and Student Guide to Japan to the Palau National Scholarship Office, PCC Library, and PHS Counseling Office. These donations are made in line with the Embassy's effort to promote the Japanese Government Scholarship which has been available to the students of Palau on a yearly basis since 1982.

In addition to the school catalog and Student Guide, the Scholarship Office will also receive two other booklets namely, Scholarships for International Students in Japan and JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization) Outline 2006-6007. The Scholarships for International Students in Japan lists five (5) categories of scholarships available for international students to apply in order to study in Japan. It also lists fields of study available, amount of scholarship, application procedures, and contact information.

The JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization) Outline 2006-6007 is an information guide produced by the Organization that aims "To Nurture Creative and Enriched Minds". By providing supports to international students, JASSO offers enhanced support programs to enable international students to maintain and achieve their

academic goals. Such programs include: scholarships, international exchange programs, accommodations, as well as collecting and disseminating information to students abroad. This gives JASSO the mission of nurturing ingenious leaders of the next generation, as well as the advancement of global harmony and understanding. All the above-mentioned manuals are provided by JASSO in their continuing effort to provide the most comprehensive and up-to-date information available regarding higher education in Japan.

Through the availability of these manuals, the Embassy encourages students to consider Japan as another option for higher education. This is very much achievable through the Japanese Government Scholarships which offer higher education opportunities in Professional Training Programs, Undergraduate Programs and Post Graduate Programs including Master's and Doctorate programs.

The Japanese Government Scholarships is another example of Japan's efforts to promote the human resources development of Palau. For further information regarding the Japanese Government Scholarships, contact Japan Embassy at 488-6455/6, Palau National Scholarship Office at 488-3608, or refer to the manuals available at PCC Library or PHS Counseling Office.

More Creative Writing -
Part III

Below is another writing by a student in Midori Mersai's English summer class who also submitted a paper for the in-class creative writing contest. Good work, kids. Look for additional installments in next week's Mesekiu's News.

"First time I fell in love": by Ideara Sasao

I don't believe in love at first sight. Although I strongly feel that the more time we spend together, eventually I'd fall in love with him. I mean, maybe it seemed like he glowed in some kind of way, but probably it's his smile that's just breath-taking. Either that or it's his energy and enthusiasm in the things he does. Oh! and the way he looked at me with a shimmer in his eyes, his perfect smile and his luscious lips just made me feel important, and that I was the prettiest lady he's ever laid eyes on. Just being around him the more I draw closer to falling in love with the person that lies within. Then it comes to a point where my life seems to revolve around him, everytime I hear his name or if I see him at a distance I would feel apprehensive. Or if he says my name it's like I skipped a couple of heart beats. Until everytime we're together, I get goosebumps like there's a cold air blowing on my neck and down my spine. And having butterflies in my stomach makes it as though I'm floating and the time we spent together seems like it's not enough. I wonder if he feels the same because I would get all sweaty and nervous around him. My whole body gets cold and numb as ice. The adrenalin rush of falling in love with each other is indescribable. But some things can't always last forever, and it has to end whether in a good or bad way.
