ALA Donates to PCC Library |
UOG TRIO Students Visit the College
On their annual cultural/educational enrichment trip to Palau, four Talent Search students and two Upward Bound students, along with Director Yoichi Rengiil and Assistant Director Lovelynn Mongami had some time to visit the College. They also collectively, amongst themselves, raised $200 dollars and donated it to the College's Endowment Fund. The six students and two staff arrived on the island on March 30th and made it just in time to witness the arrival of the Hokule'a and Alingano Maisu. The students and staff will be departing the island this weekend. The College would like to thank them for visiting the campus and for donating $200, out of their own pockets, to PCC's Endowment Fund. We wish you safe trip back home and hope to see you next year! REMINDER!!! On April 20th, the front PCC parking lot will be used for the Earth Day Celebration; therefore, all PCC Staff and Students are requested to utilize all other campus parking lots for that day. Thank you for your cooperation! |

PCC Librarian, Debra Neas, and her staff recognize and appreciate Library and Information Services instructor, Pam Bidwell, for her role in the acquisition of the reference collection from American Library Association (ALA). In November 2006 the Palau Association of Libraries hosted the 16th conference of the Pacific Islands Association of Libraries and Archives (PIALA). Attending for the first time was Keith Fiels, Executive Director of ALA and Michael Dowling, Director of the ALA's International Office. |
This was an excellent opportunity to seek their advice and assistance for improving the libraries of Palau. Pam Bidwell, Library and Information Services instructor has kept in contact with Michael Dowling from their international office since that time. So when judging was over for the ALA's annual list of Outstanding Reference Sources, Mr. Dowling was pleased to offer PCC Library our choice of a range of encyclopedias and dictionaries. These titles were chosen as the most appropriate for the needs of Palau's library users. Some titles, such as the Gale Encyclopedia of Children's Health, the Encyclopedia of Law Enforcement, and the American Heritage Science Dictionary will be particularly useful for students studying PCC's Science, Nursing and Criminal Justice courses. However, there are also items of interest for our courses in History, Social Science, Religion and Health & Physical Education. The total value of this donation is over three thousand dollars ($3000). We are extremely grateful to the ALA for donating these new resources for PCC's library reference collection. |

Work-Study Students' Success Stories- Part 5 |
"Because of this job, we have learned the right and better way to be with kids and get them to concentrate on their work", says PCC students, Ms. Ubi Oiterong and Omtilou Tellei. Oiterong and Tellei are both freshmen, |
majoring in Office Administration (OA). They are both working at Koror Elementary School (K.E.S.) as Math and English tutors for Supervisor Anastacio's 2nd grade class. "All I wanted was for the students to be able to understand and study the kids' weaknesses and behavior so that they know how to help them and so far, they are living up to my expectations, says Supervisor Anastacio. "Working off campus has enabled us to get some work experience and compare our career interests with our current work-study", says Oiterong and Tellei. However, they also said that it would be even more helpful if they are given additional hours so that they have more time to experience everything that happens in their workplace. |

Former PCC Students Return on Alingano Maisu |
The arrival of the Hokule'a and Alingano Maisu is itself historical, but to have two former PCC students on board is even more memorable. Norman Tewalmai is Alingano Maisu's Crew Supervisor and Alafanso Pieiluk is one of the crew members. Tewalmai started learning about navigation in his very early childhood years, while Pieiluk started learning when he attended the Tradition Navigation Society after graduating from PCC in 2004 with a Certificate of Achievement (CA) in General Electronics-Consumer Electronics Technician (GECE). "This is not the first time I've traveled far distance on a canoe. During the Pacific Arts Festival in 2004, Navigator Sesario arrived in Palau on a canoe from Yap and when he left, I left with him too. Now, I'm back the same way I left", jokingly says Pieiluk. He also smiled saying that he |
didn't need his passport to return to Yap and he didn't need it again to come backto Palau! Pieiluk says that traveling far distance on a canoe is always scary, but it's definitely worth the experience. Tewalmai and Pieiluk were very excited to come back to Palau and see their friends again. Upon visiting PCC, they said that the campus has improved and has new buildings. They were also amazed at the Capitol's new relocation to Babeldaob and the smooth compact road when they went on the Babeldaob Tour. Tewalmai and Pieiluk thanks the College for the opportunity to visit the campus and encourage PCC students to continue their education. After returning to Yap and finishing his studies in Traditional Navigation Society, Pieiluk plans on returning to PCC to study Auto Mechanics. |

Mesekiu Defeats Ngerbeches and Kayangel |
PCC Mesekiu baseball team defeated Ngerbeches 20 to 0 in a mercy rule shortened game on Thursday, March 31, 2007. The win is their fifth in a row since their sole loss to Kayangel in the second round and improves its record to league leading 15 wins. Once again, it was PCC's potent offense that buried Ngerbeches team, striking early for 8 runs in the opening inning on a pair of 2-RBI doubles by Melengis Uchel and Cleofas Iyar, and singles by Caleb Meltel, Ngirailals Polloi, Ty Saiske, and Omsuul Yalap. PCC scored three more in the second inning on a three-run homer by pitcher Cleofas Iyar. PCC increased their lead to 15-0 by scoring six in the third inning on singles by Ititel Mad, Yalap, and Meltel, doubles by Dekei Ngiramengior and Sureor Ngirailemesang, and a 2-run homer by Uchel. PCC's final scores came in the fourth on singles by Yalap and Ngiramengior for a final score of 20 to 0. Iyar's homer is his first of the season while Uchel's homer is team's and league's leading 6th of the season. Starting Pitcher Iyar struck out four in three shutout innings, and reliever Saiske pitched the final inning. Then on Saturday, in front of a huge crowd, the PCC Mesekiu baseball team overpowered Kayangel to remain atop the PML standings (15 wins, 1 Loss) and sending Kayangel into a three-way tie with Airai and Ngerbeched. With the win, PCC is now four full games ahead of the pack. |
Both teams struck early with PCC scoring two in the top of the first on a singles by Bedor Kyota and Ngiramengior and a double by cleanup batter Uchel. Kayangel quickly took the lead in the bottom of the opening inning on a three-run homer by veteran Wiseman Kumaichi. Kayangel's lead was short lived as PCC came back in base and scored on a single by Yalap. Ngiramengior doubled to reach second and pushed Yalap to third base. With two in scoring bases, Kayangel made a risky decision to intentionally walk Uchel, the league home-run leader, to load the bases, a move that proved costly as Meltel singled to score both Yalap and Ngiramengior. Kayangel would only manage one more run the rest of the games as winning pitcher Ngirailemesang kept their bats in check. PCC scored two more runs, one in the fifth on a triple by Saiske and one in the ninth inning via a solo homer by pitcher Ngirailemesang, his fourth of the season. Contributing offensively for PCC's 12-hit attack were Kyota-single; Yalap- 2 singles; Ngiramengior- double and 2 singles; Uchel- double and a single; Meltel- single; Ngirailemesang- solo homer; and Saiske- 2 triples. The Mesekiu players and coaching staff thanks Cafeteria staff for providing their post-game meals. They would also like to thank Dean Timarong and Librarian Neas for their donations.
