Palau Community College celebrates its 15th Charter Day today, April 4th. Today's events kick-off at 5:30 a.m. with the traditional President's Run & Walk from the Japan-Palau Friendship Bridge to PCC Track & Field. The Run & Walk is open to the public and is known to attract hundreds of walkers and runners. The day's celebration will also be marked by a gathering of students and staff at the main Courtyard on campus to hear an address by a member of the Board of Trustees and President Tellei. |
The crowd will also witness the colorful dance performances and presentations by students from the island states throughout Micronesia. Sponsored by the Associated Students of Palau Community College (ASPCC), traditional and contemporary dance performances from students from the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), Republic of Palau, and the Republic of the Marshall Islands will be part of the activities. According to Tchuzie Tadao who chairs the Charter Day planning committee, the celebration on campus is convenient and easier for all staff and students to attend as we want to make sure that everyone has the chance to participate in the activities in marking the 15th birthday of our College. For more information regarding the 15th Charter Day, contact Co-Chairs Tzuchie Tadao at 488-3965 or Ephraim Ngirachitei at 488-3074. |

SSS-Project Beacon's Expedition to Ngaraard State |
||
|
Forty students and staff from
SSS-Project Beacon went on a cultural excursion throughout the State
of Ngaraard on Friday, March 28th, 2008.
The first stop was the "foundation of
youth" called NGERCHOKL. The walk through the woods was relaxing
and pleasant. When Melson from Bureau of Arts & Culture began describing
the legend of long ago, each of us anticipated the outcome of the story,
wondering how the fountain came about. The legend began because two boys
were very thoughtful and respectful of their parents, that they brought the
entire "melaok" catch of fish home for the College Donates to ARFF To coincide with the grand opening of the newly-built Airport Rescue and Fire-fighting Facility (ARFF) which takes place today, the College, instructors Frutoso Tellei and Lester Rekemesik, and the carpentry students donated a mini-abai requested by Mrs. Jennifer Yano, to be placed in the front entrance of the facility. Tellei, Rekemesik, and the carpentry students scaled the abai at Ngarachamayong Cultural Center and built a smaller replica for ARFF. |
parents. So in return, the father
wanted to give them everlasting life. And that's how the magic was brought
upon NGERCHOKL. Upon close inspection of a rock on the riverbed, footprints
of the child in the story were embedded into the hard stone. Melson
also informed us that because of development, the river which turns into
a beautiful waterfall has slowly receded, and the water now murky from
the compact road construction. We continued on to Ngebuked, where
we stopped at Aileen Ngirturong's home and tasted the wonderful
"demok" that she had prepared for us. She gave us
a quick demonstration/explanation on how to create the local soup that Ngaraard State is famous for. It even
had "rekung" in it, and that was a treat
for those of us who weren't allergic to crustaceans. Following the demok
treat, Beluong Ngirmekur from Ngaraard State met up with us and we hiked the
ancient platform to where Bai er Ruau was located. Around the same area is
the Bad er a Odesangel, a pillar in memory of the day that the people of Peleliu
who were in Ngaraard came out hiding. We continued the hike to the burial site
of Surech's head which was not very far, and then to the Ngebuked odesongel, (Continued from front page) Yeh; Lennie Dancel; and Gil Postrano. Participants who completed the Basic Mandarin II class are: Warren Fukuichi; Kathy Mendoza; Patricia Remeliik; Ann Yeh; Tan Yeh; and Willy Yeh. Wenling Su is set to start teaching Mandarin to private agencies beginning with the employees of the Palau Public Utility Corporation from April 21st. |
the burial site of the former Maderngebuked.
Afterwards, our journey continued on to Elab, another village of Ngaraard. It was yet another hike through the ancient village where we walked only on platforms fashioned by ancestral people of Elab. We saw some interesting pillars established along the site, but a particular one with faces engraved on all sides and a lizard at the bottom of one side took our attention. Unfortunately, the story behind the pillar will never be known for it was not passed down. We had made a final hike down to Beriber, a beach at the end of our route, where we took a breather and headed for Kuabes for lunch. After a delicious lunch (which included meatloaf…yum), we held a workshop on the topic "I CAN COPE" presented by Counselor Adora Nobuo. We all discussed as a group what different mottos meant to each of us, and then learned how these mottos can help us cope with our daily problems, issues, and/or concerns. The beautiful beach of Kuabes was breezy, helping us relax and become one with nature. It was a beautiful place to end a day of strenuous hiking. (Continued on back page) |

PCC Wins Three; Bags Pennant |
|
|
Finding itself in a must-win situation to secure the pennant title, the Mesekiu Baseball Team of Palau Community College was faced with the nearly impossible task of having to win not one, not two but three games in a row-their last three games of the regular season. Showing the true grit and determination, the Mesekiu's performance was nothing short of brilliant, defeating three of Palau Major League's top teams of Ngerbeches, Kayangel and Ngerbeched. Their win against Ngerbeches came last Friday as Mesekiu overwhelmed Ngerbeches to secure an 8th inning drawn game victory by a score of 17-6. Although finding itself trailing earlier, PCC exploded for six runs in the 5th inning, with five in the seventh and four in the eighth to secure the victory. Jason Monkeya pitched four innings and Ty Saiske pitched five innings and earned a win. On Saturday, Mesekiu defeated Kayangel by a score of 10-3. The much anticipated game was scoreless until the top of the fourth when Mesekiu put three runs on the board with consecutive singles by Dekei Ngiramengior and Cleofas Iyar, and Sureor Ngirailemesang hitting a double to bring them in. Sureor later scored on a single by Dexter Sadang. Mesekiu scored two more in the sixth on singles by Etitel Mad, Sadang, Saiske, and Kalei Luii. In the seventh, Kaleb Meltel singled to reach first, and once again, stepping up to the challenge, Sureor tripled deep over the centerfielder to bring Meltel in. Mesekiu put the game out of reach in the ninth when lead-off hitter Ngiramengior doubled and scored on a single by Iyar. Sureor reached base again on HP and Etitel doubled to bring home Cleofas and Sureor. Etitel later scored on a sacrifice by Dexter. |
Sureor earned a win for his superb work on the mound, pitching a complete game with 10 strikeouts, 4 walks, and allowing only four hits. Then on Tuesday, the Mesekiu, trailing league-leader Airai Aces by half a game, had to beat Ngerbeched to overtake the lead and clinch the pennant. With its back against the wall, Mesekiu went to their MVP ace pitcher Ty Saiske and he did not disappoint. Ngerbeched jumped infront in the first inning when former PCC player Bedor Kyota singled and advanced to scoring base via single by veteran Turu Tellei and scored on a sacrifice from another veteran Alonz Moses. In the bottom of the first, PCC took a 2-1 lead as leadoff hitter Etitel Mad singled and Merei Ise reached first on a base-on ball. Ngiramengior whacked a 2-RBI hard liner to left field to score Etitel and Merei. In the top of the second, Saiske continued to struggle on the mound as Ngerbeched scored three more runs to take a 4-2 lead. Mesekiu's usually potent offense seemed to struggle as they failed to score in the second and third innings. Fortunately, Saiske regained his MVP pitcher form and kept Ngerbeched scoreless the rest of the innings. Mesekiu in the fourth inning, as they have done numerous times during the season, fought back and put three on the board to take a 5-4 lead. Mesekiu scored another run in the top of the fifth to go up by two but the game ended prematurely in the fifth inning due to rain, giving Mesekiu the win. With the pennant and the top spot in the standings, Mesekiu will play Kayangel in the best of five playoff series while #2 Airai Aces plays #3 Ngerbeched. The playoffs begin on Monday, April 7, 2008. |
