AC Trainees Apply Practical Knowledge in Ngiwal

The short term training in installation, servicing, and maintaining of air conditioning (AC) and refrigeration units began earlier this month and will continue until May 3, 2007.

The trainees from the state government of Ngiwal, Melekeok, Ngaraard, and the Ministry of Health were able to apply their practical skills in installing window type and split type air conditioning units at Ngiwal State office. They were able to practically apply the following learning outcome:

• Interpret work/installation of the units.

• Prepare cavity for installation of the   units.

• Perform cavity work.

• Install the units.

• Safely install electrical and wiring   devices.

• Test run the units for the correct performance based on manufacturers specifications and standards.

AC and Refrigeration Instructor and his training students would like to thank the Governor of Ngiwal State, Masasinge Arurang for allowing the trainees to apply the practical knowledge in installing their new air conditioning units.

While the rest of the republic celebrated Earth Day at the PCC parking lot, SSS-Project Beacon clients celebrated Earth Day with a job-site visit and a cultural trip. Forty students and staff of the program went on a job site visit/ cultural trip to Ngatpang Aquaculture and the PCC-CRE Research Station at Ngaremlengui. At Ngatpang Aquaculture, we were guided by Mr. Eric Basco. The tour of the Ngatpang Aquaculture exposed the students to the ecological and economical importance of the organisms bred at the aquaculture: milkfish, bait tuna, algae, and oysters. The students all got a chance to feed the milkfish in the floating cages, which held 1,500 milkfish in each cage. We got to visit the Mud Crab Farm where everyone got a chance to see the natural world of the mud crab.

At the end of the Aquaculture Tour, it was lunchtime already, and all were famished. Hence, everyone enjoyed the delicious lunch packed by our very own PCC Cafeteria staff, at the Ngatpang Port.

At 1:00 p.m. the journey continued to PCC CRE-R&D Station at Ngermeskang for a tour of the research station and a workshop on insects, the different types of taro, tapioca and sweetpotatoes, animal husbandry, and shouchu making.

Much appreciation to Vice President Taro, Researchers, Dr. Esguerra and Dr. Del Rosario, as well as CRE Staff, Felix Sengebau and Lyndon Masami for the informative presentations and tour of the facilities. When the tour was over, Josepha Tutii presented a workshop on Food Safety & Nutrition. The students divided into two groups and each prepared a dish of their own. After a good couple of hours, everyone enjoyed a meal of pancit and pork sinigang. Succeeding dinner was nothing but a night of great, scary movies! 300, Santeria, and The Return!

Then the sun rose! It was time to get a move on it and head for the waterfall, under the guided tour of Ms. Leilanie Rechelluul. The weather was hot, everyone's bags were heavy, the road dangerously hazardous, and the hike terribly long. Yet, despite the sighs and the sweats, the task was accomplished—waterfall reached! The beauty of the waterfall was definitely worth the hike. Special recognition goes to Aluka and Ikurt for winning the "Amazing Race".

Altogether, the job site and cultural trip was fun and educational.

Application forms are now ready for pick up anytime during working hours from Monday to Friday. Deadline for submission of completed application forms is Tuesday, May 22, 2007 in order for students to be considered for internship placement. Internship is provided as a final requirement for students who have completed all their course requirements on campus or at most have one remaining to be taken concurrently with the training. It allows students to be placed on the job in their respective field of training working on a full time basis as intern trainee for the semester. The practical experience gained from the training will be counted as credits required for students to graduate.

Know How to Protect Yourself-
Campus Safety Tips

Even if the campus seems to be a safe place, you still need to consider safety precautions in order to protect yourself from impending threats. Listed below are some Campus Safety Tips that you need to consider and put into practice in order for you to be safe and not feel threatened in the campus and the dormitories.

• Study the routes to and from your classes, resource centers, and dormitory.

• Always survey your surroundings, the buildings, facilities, walkways, and parking lots for suspicious people or behaviors.

• If it's after dark, always take the route where it's fully lighted.

• Always walk in groups.

• When in a room by yourself, always lock the door.

• When using the restroom, always lock the door.

• Always carry a cell phone with you in case you need to make an emergency phone call (When calling 911, you do not use up air time).

• Security Guards are always patrolling the campus and the dormitory areas. They have two offices, one is located on the upper campus on the second floor of Ewatel building and the contact number is 488-4178. The other is located on the side of the cafeteria facing Dorm C and they can also be reached at 488-2357.
