Jobsite Visit to NECO Group of Companies |
|
|
Nine Student Support Services Project Beacon participants and counselor, Adora Nobuo went on a jobsite visit to NECO Group of Companies on Thursday, April 24, 2008. It began by driving through traffic to NECO Yamaha/NECO Marine in Malakal. There, Henni Rall & Marllis Besong gave us a tour of the shops and described what their work entailed. The Yamaha shop was filled with parts, and Henni explained how the shop provided services to customers. This is a one stop shop with parts that are being ordered, a shop to bring boats in for services in terms of fiber glassing, engine repair and more. Trainings are even held not only for mechanics at the shop, but extended to others in the community that deals with Yamaha engines. NECO Marine includes the dive shop, the gift shop, and the "Reservations desk". It was stressed that the "Reservations Desk" was a very important aspect because it was how customers made contact with NECO Marine and booked their trips. Interesting scene was a bamboo cage split into three areas to grow fish for production. As Henni described it, growing the fishes in the cages will help solve the depleting number of fishes in the sea. People can buy the fishes grown in cages, instead of going out to the reef and fishing for them. We then proceeded to the NECO Group of Companies main office, where we met with Engineer Skeras Etpison, Construction supervisor Shao Yang Chun, Business Office personnel Ricelle Guevarra, Daria Meteolechol, Usiab Watanabe, Maria Igpanara, Richelda Rosales, Regina Etpison, and Rey Allones. Between all of them, they explained the work that took place in the main office. Having 300 plus employees, they had to have accurate accounting, filing systems, payroll, personnel management, and more to keep all records. Skeras discussed the importance of having employees that were dependable, as the engineering department was relied upon to provide machinery and supplies to the construction department. |
Mr. Shao Yang Chun took
the students to see some of the architectural designs that they had constructed,
even showing the construction majors the different types of tiles used in regards
to how they made them light and user friendly. It was a very exciting trip that
all students enjoyed participating in. Upon our return, we had an information
workshop on Transferring to a 4 year college which was presented by Counselor
Adora Nobuo. Lunch was provided by PCC Cafeteria and it was delicious. A big
thank you goes out to Mr. Shallum Etpison for allowing us the opportunity to tour
the NECO Group of Companies, to Ms. Karen Etpison for coordinating the visits to
the different areas of the companies, Mr. Ismael Anastacio for driving our
group around and waiting patiently, and to PCC cafeteria and staff for wonderful lunches.
All in all, it was a trip to remember. (Continued from page 2) The seven graduates include Jonathan Tamag from the State of Yap; Sylvia Sumdad, Nemie Romano, Efigenia Merico, Arlene Sablan, and Princesita Mateo all from the Philippines; and MonaLisa Antonio from Palau. They will now have the certification and opportunity to become alcohol and other substance abuse counselors with the Bedochel Substance Abuse Center. For more information about the Counseling Course, call the Bedochel Substance Abuse Center at 488-4711 or the PCC CE Office at 488-6223/2470/2471. |

On Monday night pennant winners PCC Mesekiu dominated the opening game of the series both offensively and defensively. Mesekiu's offense collected 21 hits while ace pitcher Sureor Ngirailemesang allowed only 6 hits and 2 BBs and struck-out 6. PCC scored early in the first inning when Etitel Mad reached first on BB, stole 2nd and scored on an RBI single by Dekei Ngiramengior. Ngiramengior advanced to scoring base on a single by Cleofas Iyar and later scored on an RBI single by Kalei Luii. PCC's scoring continued as they scored their 14 runs the first innings, scoring in every inning. The 21-hit PCC attack was led by Dekei Ngiramengior who went 4-for-5 including a double and a triple with 5 RBIs. Merei Ise had 4 singles while Kalei Luii and Sureor Ngirailemesang with 3 singles each. Cleofas Iyar with a double and a single, Ty Saiske 2 singles, Kaleb Meltel and Dexter Sadang each with a single. |
Twenty-fours hours after game 1, PCC's offense seemed elusive as the Mesekiu struggled to score resulting in a 2-3 loss. While Ngerbeched pitcher Caleb Dulei kept Mesekiu bats in check, Ngerbeched scored two runs in the third inning. Ngerbeched maintained the lead until PCC score one in the fifth and one to tie the game at 2-2 in the seventh inning. Ngerbeched scored their winning run in the bottom of the ninth on a BB to Drake Yoshiwo, consecutive singles by C-Boy Rimirch and Rodney Kazuma, and a perfectly executed bunt from Billy Umang. While the loss evens the series, PCC remains determined to play a successful series; however, a more disheartening incident was an injury to Ngiramengior, one of the pillars of Mesekiu's offense, who suffered a broken leg and is out for the rest of the series. The entire Mesekiu team wishes Ngiramengior a full and quick recovery. |
