Oiterong and Ngiracheluolu Retire
After 56 Years of Service

Green Machine
Servicing Course Offered at the College

Small Engine Instructor, Joshua Ngirngebedangel (center) with trainees from the Bureau of Public Works and Sewer Treatment Plant at the Small Engine Shop at PCC.

A short-term training course covering the service and maintenance of green machines began this week at the College. The 40-hour class is being conducted during the evening hours for Bureau of Public Works employees, primarily from the Road and Ground crew, and the Sewer Treatment Plant. The course is being sponsored by the Operations and Maintenance Improvement Program (OMIP) at the College, and is being taught by the Small Engine & Outboard Marine Technology Instructor, Mr. Joshua Ngirngebedangel. Trainees are learning about the different systems that make up a green machine, how to maintain them, how to service them, and how to overhaul the engine. The training is primarily hands-on, and it should help Public Works personnel make their equipment last much longer.

For more information, please contact Don Hanser or Sherman Daniel at OMIP office at 488-2471 ext. 254.

Baskasio Oiterong, retired Math Instructor
.

The College has been very fortunate in having Baskasio Oiterong and Midas Ngiracheluolu contribute a total of fifty-six (56) years of service to the College.

Mr. Baskasio Oiterong began his career at the College as a Math Instructor in 1982. Since 1993, Oiterong taught 2,239 students before he retired in February of this year. This figure, however, does not include the years when he first began teaching up to 1992. Therefore, it can be said that he has taught over 2,239 students. He dedicated 25 years teaching a broad range of math courses, concentrating more on developmental math and technical math.

"I came on board in 1989, and Oiterong was already working here. We were then colleagues as instructors. Oiterong was very influential and was always there to assist the students. He did a great job professionally", says Dean Alvina Timarong.

Another PCC staff, Midas Ngiracheluolu retired from the College after 31 years. Ngiracheluolu began his career at then Micronesian

Midas Ngiracheluolu, retired Security Service Officer.

Occupational Center (MOC) as a Warehouseman in 1976. Then in 1983 when the College was then called Micronesian Occupational College (MOC), he became a Supply Technician. Then on 1994 when the College was no longer MOC, but Palau Community College (PCC), he became a Supply Clerk. In 2000, he began working as a Maintenance Technician for two years before he became a Security Service Officer up until his retirement late in February and his limited term contract ended late last month.

In honor of their services, the Faculty Senate and the Administration hosted farewell luncheons for Oiterong and Ngiracheluolu.

The Board of Trustees, President Dr. Tellei, Administration, Faculty, Staff, and most especially the Students, thank Mr. Oiterong and Mr. Ngiracheluolu for all the years they have contributed their services to the College. The PCC Family extends Best Wishes and Happy Retirement to Oiterong and Ngiracheluolu! We will miss you both very much!

Deepest Condolences

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, Administration, Faculty, Staff, and Students, President Dr. Tellei extends deepest condolences to the Family of PCC student, Gelvon Gates. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this most difficult time.

Sincerest Apology to Miriam Anastacio...

Tips for the Classroom
Taken from Study Tips.com at http://www.how-to-study.com
A Strategy for Reading Textbooks

SQRW is a four-step strategy for reading and taking notes from chapters in a textbook. Each letter stands for one step in the strategy. Using SQRW will help you to understand what you read and to prepare a written record of what you learned. The written record will be valuable when you have to participate in a class discussion and again when you study for a test. Read to learn what to do for each step in SQRW.

Survey.
Surveying brings to mind what you already know about the topic of a chapter and prepares you for learning more. To survey a chapter, read the title, introduction, headings, and the summary or conclusion. Also, examine all visuals such as pictures, tables, maps, and/or graphs and read the caption that goes with each. By surveying a chapter, you will quickly learn what the chapter is about.

Question.
You need to have questions in your mind as you read. Questions give you a purpose for reading and help you stay focused on the reading assignment. Form questions by changing each chapter heading into a question. Use the words who, what, when, where, why, or how to form questions. For example, for the heading "Uses of Electricity" in a chapter about how science improves lives, you might form the question "What are some

uses of electricity?" If a heading is stated as a question, use that question. When a heading contains more than one idea, form a question for each idea. Do not form questions for the Introduction, Summary, or Conclusion.

Read.
Read the information that follows each heading to find the answer to each question you formed. As you do this, you may decide you need to change a question or turn it into several questions to be answered. Stay focused and flexible so you can gather as much information as you need to answer each question.

Write.
Write each question and its answer in your notebook. Reread each of your written answers to be sure each answer is legible and contains all the important information needed to answer the question.
As you practice using SQRW, you will find you learn more and have good study notes to use to prepare for class participation and tests.

HINT: Once you complete the Survey step for the entire chapter, complete the Question, Read, and Write steps for the first heading. Then complete the Question, Read, and Write steps for the second heading, and so on for the remaining headings in the chapter.

Saiske & Ngirailemesang Combo Subdue Airai for another PCC Win

On Saturday, April 6th the PCC Mesekiu (18-1) defeated Airai (14-6) behind superb pitching by Ty Saiske and Sureor Ngirailemesang who combined for a three-hitter thrashing 12-3 win over Airai. Starter Saiske pitched four strong innings, striking out four and allowing only 2 singles. Ngirailemesang struck out 10 and allowed only 1 single in five innings, including retiring the side in order on only 9 pitches in the final inning.

Offensively, once again the PCC Mesekiu demonstrated the potency of its offense by collecting 18 hits, with each starting player reaching base and scoring. While Airai's scores only came in the third inning via errors, Mesekiu's offensive attack produced runs in almost every innings, including six runs in the eighth inning. Caleb Meltel collected two doubles and two singles; Dekei Ngiramengior and Omsuul Yalap each with two singles and a double; Melengis Uchel single and a double; Ngirailemesang two singles; Cleofas Iyar single; and Saiske one single.

On Wednesday, April 11th, the PCC Mesekiu won against Koror, 20-2. This was a very unique game as it only ended in the third inning by forfeiture at the request of the Koror team. Mesekiu team will have its final game of the regular season against Ngardmau Pirates on Saturday, April 14th. In the meantime, they continue to practice in preparation for the playoffs.
